CBS just fleshed out some of the details of CBSN, the 24/7 ad supported online news site it unveiled yesterday. It will have a 60 minute format, updating news between 9 AM and midnight ET. But users will also have “DVR -like functionality” to switch between live programming and previous segments.
In addition to the live, anchored programming, CBSN will provide simulcasts of CBS News special reports, and “additional content” from CBS’ affiliates, CNET, CBSSports.com, and Entertainment Tonight. Correspondents will include Jeff Glor, Elaine Quijano, Michelle Miller, Don Dahler, and Vladimir Duthiers.
The service is available at CBSnews.com and its mobile website, several smart TV devices (the company names Amazon Fire TV and Roku) and the CBS News app for Windows. Apps for Android and “other leading platforms” will be available by year-end.
“There’s a tremendous opportunity on these platforms for a true round-the-clock newscast,” CEO Les Moonves says. “We are confident this service will appeal to both traditional news consumers and a whole new set of viewers.”
CBS Interactive CEO Jim Lanzone adds that the company is “developing original content exclusively for online, connected platforms in a true interactive format that users can control, allowing them to lean back or lean into the segments and stories that interest them.”
Microsoft and Amazon are the inaugural sponsors, but CBS says that others will also appear on all devices with “custom ad integrations.”
