Bradley Whitford has joined the cast of Showtime comedy pilot Happy-ish. He will play Jonathan Cooke, Thom Payne’s (Steve Coogan) boss and an advertising legend who success is due in equal parts to his creative genius and moral cravenness. The role was played by Rhys Ifans in the original pilot starring the late Philip Seymour Hoffman as Payne.

The West Wing alum Whitford, repped by WME and Greenlight Management, joins leads Coogan and Kathryn Hahn — reprising her role from the original pilot — in the half-hour pilot, described as a scathing examination of our pursuit of happiness, a pursuit that might just be the very thing causing our unhappiness in the first place. Filming is scheduled to begin next month in New York.

Happy-ish was created, written and executive produced by Shalom Auslander. Ken Kwapis will executive produce and direct the pilot. Kwapis’ producing partner Alexandra Beattie will co-executive produce under their In Cahoots banner.
