You might love the music of singer Aaliyah but, as my video review says, you probably won’t love the new movie about her life, Aaliyah: The Princess Of R&B.
Debuting on Lifetime this Saturday night, the movie stars Alexandra Shipp as the singer and Cle Bennett as her producer and illegal husband R. Kelly. Not to give too much away, but this is a soulless, aimless look at the life of the singer, who was just 22 when she died in a plane crash in 2001.
Honestly, the casting changes that have dogged the project have had more drama than anything in this Bradley Walsh-directed effort. Based on Christopher John Farley’s bestselling bio and executive produced by Wendy Williams, the best and worst thing this TV movie does is make the anything-but-saintly Kelly look good. That may not be something you want to be known for.
