Amidst a tumultuous second term for President Barack Obama who is facing an uphill battle at the midterm elections next week, comes POTUS, a drama project in development at Fox from Homeland and 24 executive producer Howard Gordon.
Described as a topical and high-intensity drama and part wish-fulfillment/part cautionary tale, POTUS follows an American President frustrated with politics as usual, who decides to play by his own rules. It tells the story of a man with good intentions who ultimately becomes corrupted by power.
Sam Chalsen & Nelson Greaves are writing the script with 24: Live Another Day showrunners Manny Coto and Evan Katz supervising. Gordon, Coto and Katz executive produce for 20th TV and Gordon’s studio-based Teakwood Lane Prods. Chalsen, Greaves and Teakwood Lane’s Hugh Fitzpatrick serve as co-executive producers.
U.S. presidents as a fictional characters have been popular on TV in recent years. Dennis Haysbert played U.S, President David Palmer in Fox’s 24; Geena Davis also played the first female American president in Commander In Chief. There’s also President Josiah “Jed” Bartlet, played by Martin Sheen in The West Wing, Tony Goldwyn as President Fitzgerald Grant on ABC’s Scandal and Julia Louis Dreyfus as Veep-turned-President Selina Meyer on HBO comedy Veep.
This marks the third sale and third big commitment for WME-repped Teakwood Lane, which has two put pilots, Frankenstein at Fox with Rand Ravich and a detective drama at CBS with writer Jim Wong.
