EXCLUSIVE: Entertainment One Television has teamed with Shaw Media in Canada and TF1 in France to develop and produce hostage-negotiator drama Ransom. The X-Files vet and Transporter series showrunner Frank Spotnitz co-created the series with David Vainola, who will serve as an executive producer. Spotnitz also is exec producing the series that’s based on the life experiences of crisis negotiator Laurent Combalbert.
Combalbert is one of the world’s most successful private negotiators. In the series, his character will be teamed with a feisty lawyer, a computer hacker and a therapist traveling the globe to defuse international crises — from hostage negotiations to kidnappings. The procedural will have an open-and-shut case per episode, I’m told.

“The real-life cases Laurent undertakes make for nail-biting suspense and incredible human drama,” Spotnitz said. “This is going to be a thrilling series.”
Production is eyed for spring in Montreal. Ransom will be produced by Jennifer Kawaja and Julia Sereny via their Sienna Films banner, with which eOne recently closed a first-look deal; Valerie Pechels and Odile McDonald via Wild Cat Productions; and Spotnitz via his Big Light Productions.
