High School Musical alum Vanessa Hudgens will headline another musical — this time playing the title role in a new Broadway production of Lerner and Loewe’s Gigi. The musical is set to hit the Great White Way next year after a pre-Broadway engagement at Kennedy Center in D.C. from January 16-February 12, 2015. Tickets go on sale for that September 22.
Eric Schaeffer is directing the re-envisioned adaptation by British playwright Heidi Thomas. Joshua Bergasse will choreograph the production, which was first adapted from Colette’s novel for the Broadway stage in 1951 with then-unknown Audrey Hepburn in the title role. Alan Jay Lerner (screenplay and lyrics) and Frederick Loewe (music) adapted the material for the 1958 MGM movie, which won nine Oscars including Best Film and Best Director for Vincente Minnelli. Leslie Caron played Gigi.
The new adaptation will feature the songs from the movie including “The Parisians” and “Say A Prayer For Me Tonight” as well as four songs written and added to the score by Lerner and Loewe in 1973: “Paris is Paris Again,” “I Never Want to Go Home Again,” “The Contract,” and “In This Wide, Wide World.”
A private NYC reading of Gigi in June included Hudgens as Gigi. Victoria Clark (The Light In The Piazza) and Corey Cott (Newsies) and Kate Burton (Hedda Gabler) also participated, according to Playbill. So far only Hudgens has been announced for the official cast.
Hudgens’ recent film credits include Frozen Ground, Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers and Gimme Shelter. But she started in musical theater and she appeared in the 2010 Hollywood Bowl staging of Rent.
