The Daily Show found a way to acknowledge Michael Che was heading to the anchor desk on Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update at NBC — and to note he’d only been with the Comedy Central late-night show for three months — 58 business days.
Che, who becomes Weekend Update’s first black co-anchor, joins Colin Jost. Cecily Strong, who served as co-anchor for two seasons, first with Seth Meyers and then with Jost, will return to being a full-time cast member. Unlike other “Weekend Update” hosts, she had been juggling both roles, doing the faux-newscast while also appearing in many skits. Che joined The Daily Show as a correspondent in June, after wrapping SNL — which he joined as a full-time writer last September after a guest-writing stint the previous season. The 40th season of SNL begins September 27.
