UPDATED, Monday, 12:47 PM: We have all 29 films’ final totals updated so far, including this weekend’s big box office king, The Maze Runner. Updated so far (besides Maze Runner) are Universal’s The Boxtrolls and Lucy, Disney/Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy, and the Fox titles Let’s Be Cops, How To Train Your Dragon 2 from DreamWorks’ Animation, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, Paramount’s newly revamped franchises Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Hercules, Fox’s YA success story The Fault In Our Stars, Universal’s horror flicks As Above/So Below and The Purge: Anarchy, Fox’s El Nino, Finding Fanny, Doktorspiele and Guten Tag, Ramon. We also just got Warner Bros. titles’ Dolphin Tale 2, Into The Storm, If I Stay, Relatos Salvajes and Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends and other Uni titles The Riot Club, indie fav Boyhood and dance franchise Step Up All In. Sony just weighed in on Sex Tape, Deliver Us From Evil and 22 Jump Street.
PREVIOUSLY, Sunday, 11:35 AM (PST): Overseas weekend estimates are in from most of the studios as Fox’s The Maze Runner outpaces other comers. With about $32.5M, the YA adaptation is tops domestically, and is mirroring that success overseas with $38M from 7,547 screens in 51 markets.
Impressively, it is No. 1 in 50 countries (47 markets) this weekend, including opening No. 1 in 44 countries. Last week, the film beat a path through Mexico, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Central America for a debut frame of $8.5M. Its overseas cume is now $50M and the worldwide total is $82.5M.
The Wes Ball-helmed picture, which is based on a James Dashner novel, beat the openings of both Hunger Games and Divergent in Korea ($5.5M from 648 screens), Russia ($5.75M from 1,748), Hong Kong ($1.57M from 89), Thailand ($1.4M from 270), Philippines ($1.4M from 173), and UAE ($995K from 37), among others. Notably, in Korea it had 38% of the market, one that’s been crowded with huge local pictures in recent weeks. A sequel, The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, has already been set for next September, and author Dashner tweeted this concept art today.
Other major openings came from Australia with $3.4M on 310 screens and Brazil with $2M on 344. Holdover territory Mexico added $1.9M from 843 screens and is No. 2 behind local hit Cantiflas. Taiwan ($1.49M from 125), Malaysia ($1.16M from 226), Singapore ($765K from 57) and Central America ($325K from 91) all held at No. 1. The latter rose 28% in its 2nd frame. There are still 27 international markets to open, including France, Germany, the UK and China.
A Walk Among The Tombstones is the other major new opener overseas this weekend. In 10 territories, it grossed a total of $5M. Universal only distributed this picture in the U.S. with EOne handling those duties in Canada so numbers are going to be tough to get. The $5M estimate is from Rentrak. However, the other Liam Neeson starrer Non-Stop just bowed in China where it nabbed $7M; that was a million above One Step Away, directed by Zhao Baogang grossed $6M in the country. Interestingly, the director has been behind the camera for over three decades shooting television, but One Step Away is his feature film directorial debut.
This is Where I Leave You, the R-rated comedy starring Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Adam Driver and Jane Fonda, and thriller No Good Deed, which stars Idris Elba, both opened only in one market. We do not have numbers to share for either. In addition, it’s worth noting that both the Liam Neeson picture and Maze Runner are going to be getting some competition next weekend in various markets when the Denzel Washington actioner The Equalizer bows in 65 territories. The bloody film from Washington’s Training Day director Antoine Fuqua will bow in the U.K./Ireland, Russia, Brazil, Mexico and Australia, to name a few. Of course, it will be the big newcomer stateside as well as Sony and Washington both hope to launch a new franchise with this one.
Below is a rundown of other films that have reported, including a big milestone for Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes in China and Into the Storm internationally.
Dolphin Tale 2, from Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros., opened in five smaller markets this weekend after bowing previously in seven other markets. Altogether, the family film grossed $1.3M from 1,400 screens, bringing its cume to a paltry $3.15M.
Lucy was knocked off her No. 1 international perch this weekend by The Maze Runner, but continues a strong run with a final $12.8M (combined Universal/EuropaCorp.’s grosses) this frame from 5,294 dates in 57 territories. The Universal portion was $11.4M for a total just shy of $200M, at $199.7M. The full overseas haul is now $253M.
Lucy opened No. 2 in Argentina behind local hit Wild Tales with $465K at 110 dates. Continuing a trend, the opening gave Luc Besson his best debut as a director in the market. New openings also included Bolivia (No. 1) and Venezuela ($150K at 30 dates). Russia held the 2nd frame with a No. 2 showing with $3.9M at 1,112 dates. The 11-day total is $16.5M. In the UK, the Scarlett Johansson pic has had a fantastic run and now has a cume of $21.4M. Still to open are Italy, Paraguay and Uruguay next weekend.
Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes arrived in its final international market with $3.72M on 712 Japanese screens. It was the top Hollywood picture in the territory, behind the 2nd frame of local Warner film Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends. DOTPOTA is still beating its chest in China with $3.56M from 3,000 screens for a $102.9M cume. That makes it the 2nd Fox title to surpass the $100M mark there this year. In total this frame, the sequel added $8.28M from 4,328 screens in 29 markets, taking the international cume to $478.19M and bringing the worldwide gross to over $680M.
Speaking of $100M marks, Warner Bros.’ Into the Storm blew past that this weekend. With $5.7M on 3,685 screens in 39 markets, the international cume is now $100.45M. Adding in its domestic take, the worldwide cume is almost at $150M. The top market for this disaster pic to date is Korea which has garnered $15.4M followed by China with $14.8M.
And forget western action films in Argentina. There, a black comedy titled Relatos Salvajes (Wild Stories) ranked No. 1 for its 5th straight weekend, outperforming the openings of both Lucy and The Maze Runner. With a cume of $12.3M, the black comedy is now the highest-grossing Warner Bros. film ever in Argentina.
Sony’s Sex Tape continues to perform overseas with an estimated $7.5M weekend in 52 markets. The cume is now $71.1M. Openings this frame included Venezuela with $508K on 43 screens — double the opening of Cameron Diaz’ other summer comedy, The Other Woman. Colombia launched with $190K on 60 screens, 47% bigger than Diaz’ Bad Teacher. Sex Tape had another No. 1 weekend in Germany with a cume there of $7.4M; France now has $2.8M; Italy is at $2.6M after two frames and the UK has a $5.8M cume after 3 frames.
Raphael, Michelangelo, Leonardo and Donatello traveled to Italy this weekend for the first time with a No. 1 opening. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles debuted to $2.2M at 387 locations. Paramount says this is 26% above GI Joe: Retaliation and 19% above The Lego Movie. The film also held solidly in Australia in its 2nd frame with $2.1M at 430 sites for a cume of $8.9M. In total, the Turtles added $7.1M in 49 territories this weekend for an offshore cume of $148.2M. Upcoming October releases include France, Germany, Spain and China – the latter on October 31.
Now with 83% of its international footprint covered, Guardians Of The Galaxy earned a better than estimated $6.2M overseas this weekend. That lifts the offshore cume to $318.4M, edging out the domestic take of $313.7M and bringing the global box office to $632.1M. It was playing in 38 markets this weekend, its 8th. The UK, Russia and Australia are still tops for the Marvel wonder, and China is still looming on October 10.
Hercules had no new major openings this frame, but added $5.2M at 2,803 locations in 31 markets. The international total to-date is $146.1M. In its 3rd weekend in Brazil, Hercules added $1.7M from 482 locations for a local cume of $11.6M. Germany added $924K from 561 sites bringing the local haul to $6.7M. China and Japan are still to come on October 21 and 24, respectively.
The Boxtrolls is vying for a 2nd week at No. 1 in the UK where it’s facing off with A Walk Among The Tombstones. The Universal release added an estimated $2M at 503 dates for a total of $5.98M. The full weekend for Boxtrolls is an estimated $4.2M at 1,799 dates in 11 runs for an early total of $11.1M. Australia bowed on Thursday and finished the weekend at No. 4 with $607K at 250 dates. In its 2nd frame in Mexico, the Laika animation added $925K at 589 dates for a total of $3.4M (dropping 42%). There are 46 territories to open over the next few months.
Deliver Us From Evil earned an estimated $3.9M from 40 markets this weekend, bringing the overseas cume to $47.9M. Sony says Brazil opened with a very good $1.2M on 310 screens, bigger than comp titles Insidious: Chapter 2 (+79%) and Mama (+43%). The Netherlands earned $195K on 53 screens for a No. 3 start and Japan grossed $95K on 58 screens, 7% more than Insidious: Chapter 2. In holdovers, Mexico earned $716K ($2.7M cume); France added $400K ($2.4M cume); Spain took $341K ($3M cume); Germany delivered $325K ($2.5M cume); and Russia added $175 ($8.4M cume).
Universal horror titles As Above, So Below and The Purge: Anarchy continued their international runs this weekend. The former grossed a final $2.8M at 1,989 dates in 41 territories for an overseas total of $12.4M with nine territories still to open. The Purge sequel grossed a final $962K at 3,443 dates in 19 territories and raised the international total to $36.2M this weekend. The Purge only has three more territories to open in — Peru, Thailand next weekend and in Venezuela on October 10.
In a continued string of strong runs for Fox International Productions, Spanish co-production El Nino whipped up another $1.6M from 515 screens in Spain for an international cume of $15.8M and India’s Finding Fanny made a further $573K from 556 to push its international total to $7M in 6 markets. German comedy Doktorspiele has now cumed $6.3M at home while Guten Tag, Ramon is at $4.49M in Mexico. Pride is in its second weekend in the UK and took in another $948K for a total cume in the market on 523 screens of $3M.
Fox’s Let’s Be Cops rang up another $1.69M from 880 screens in 25 markets, pushing the international cume to $25.1M and the global total over $101M. The comedy is having a huge run in Holland where it is No. 1 for the 6th frame in a row.
Warner Bros. If I Stay, based on the YA novel by author Gayle Forman, now sits with an international cume of $20.2M after adding another $3.3M this weekend in 45 territories. France opened to an estimated $393K from 151 screens and Germany debuted with about $285K from 228 screens. Holland also opened well, with $202K from 41 screens (which includes previews). It opened to No. 2 in Holland. In Spain, estimates put it at $207K from 81 runs. In Italy, it pulled in $175K from 66 screens and tallied the third best per screen average in the country. The drama starring Chloe Grace Moretz also held up well in Belgium in its second weekend, keeping its No. 1 status on 33 screens for a weekend take of around $225K. It next bows Oct. 11 in Japan.
The Expendables is still playing in 26 markets. Its cume to date is $156M internationally for a total worldwide cume of $194.8M. Domestic is $38.8M.
Passing $300M worldwide this week, The Fault In Our Stars added another $1.6M from 1,355 screens in 16 overseas markets. The international total is now $177.4M. After three weeks in Italy, the movie is at No. 3 with a $6.2M cume. In France and Venezuela it showed small drops for respective cumes of $7.9M and $7M.
With an additional $1M this frame, 22 Jump Street is playing still in 24 markets and has an international total of $133.5M. France continues to hold well, down 40% for $320K in its 4th frame for a $4.2M cume; Brazil earned another $186K ($2M cume) and Mexico added $180K ($1.8M cume).
Boyhood grossed $782K from limited releases in 20 territories for a Universal total of $12.7M. In holdovers, Spain had $255K at 111 dates in week 2 for a 10-day total of $759K and Australia grossed $162K at 49 dates for a 25-day total of $1M. The total gross for this film is $12.7M. It still has 17 markets left to open with Peru and Sweden opening this weekend. In Scandanavia, it already is doing well in Denmark, having grossed $130K in 32 runs for a 10-day total of $567K.
Still breathing fire, How To Train Your Dragon 2 added a substantial $1.27M from 2,227 screens in 29 markets as it rounds out its run. In the UK, where it has a cume of $41.4M after 11 frames, the film dropped just 7% from last weekend. The offshore total is now $436.9M, while the worldwide cume has passed $610.
Step Up All In grossed another $633K in 296 theaters in four territories to bring is Universal international cume up to $13M. It opened in New Zealand to strong numbers and a No. 2 showing with $207K in 86 dates. Australia held at No. 5 with $404K in 189 dates for an 11-day total of $1.3M. There is one last territory left to open (Panama this weekend). It’s domestic cume is $42.8M.
In other news around the world, Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends continued it stronghold on the No. 1 slot in Japan with an estimated $3.9M from 434 screens. The opening of this picture in Japan nearly doubled that of Planet of the Apes and is tracking with a nine-day cume of $21.1M. The results track 106% and 97% of Rurouni Kenshin and Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno (which has a total of $48.4M. Legend and Inferno are Warner Bros. Japan productions.
After opening in Turkey last weekend, local horror film Dabbe: Zehr-I Cin continued in the No. 1 spot, finishing the weekend ahead of both The Maze Runner and TMNT with around $452K from 285 runs. The cume to date for this local fav is $1.5M.
Along with the aforementioned Denzel Washington actioner The Equalizer, opening next weekend in the UK and Ireland is the Billy Connolly, David Tennant and Rosamund Pike comedy What We Did On Our Holiday; the horror film Anabelle in Russia (which was good to The Conjuring, having amassed $10M for it at the box office); The Drop, James Gandolfini’s last film in release, which debuts in Spain and Belgium, and Get On Up will take on France.
