The Rome Film Festival announced Tuesday the first five English-language pics for its upcoming ninth edition. The Cinema Today section will present the European premiere of Oren Moverman’s Time Out Of Mind, starring Richard Gere and Jena Malone. The Gala section will screen the international bows of Stephen Daldry’s Trash, starring Rooney Mara and Martin Sheen, and Christian Ditter’s Love, Rosie, starring Lily Collins and Sam Claflin. That section also will show the Euro premiere of Mike Binder’s Black And White, starring Kevin Costner, Gillian Jacobs, Jennifer Ehle and Octavia Spencer. Brad Anderson’s Stonehearst Asylum will have its European debut in the fest’s Genre World section. The Rome Film Festival runs October 16-25 at Auditorium Parco della Musica.

Soda Pictures has picked up Christian Petzold’s drama Phoenix following its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. Nina Hoss stars as a concentration camp survivor who tries to rebuild her life after the war, having lost almost everyone and everything important to her including herself. Ronald Zehrfeld also stars. Soda also released German auteur Petzold’s previous film, 2012’s Barbara. Phoenix will screen in Competition at the San Sebastian and BFI London film festivals before opening in the UK and Ireland in 2015. The deal was negotiated by Eve Gabereau of Soda Pictures and Brigitte Suarez and Michael Weber of the Match Factory.
MGM International Television Distribution said Monday that it has tapped Matt Vassallo as SVP International Television Distribution, Free TV Sales & Strategy and Latin America. He will manage the distribution and sales strategy of all MGM content internationally for free TV and advertiser-supported VOD and also be responsible for sales of all MGM content in Latin America in all TV distribution channels. Vassallo was SVP International Distribution at Shine International, where he focused on sales into the U.S. and Latin America. Before that he was VP Distribution at Reveille International. “Matt has outstanding relationships with his clients and has brokered a number of noteworthy international deals in his tenure,” said Chris Ottinger, President of International Television Distribution and Acquisitions at MGM, to whom Vassallo will report. “I am confident that given Matt’s many years of experience and expertise in the international marketplace, he will be an invaluable addition to our team.”
