Beautiful — The Carole King Musical has recouped production costs after about 10 months on Broadway. Capitalized at $13 million, the biotuner-slash-jukebox show stars Tony winner Jessie Mueller in the title role at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre since it opened in January. Deadline.com learned exclusively that Mueller has signed on to stay with the show through March 2015.
Last week the show took in $1.3 million at the Sondheim, improving by about $400,000 over the previous week. It lays claim to being the first the first new musical of the 2013-2014 season to recoup. The lead producers are Paul Blake and Sony/ATV Music Publishing.
Featuring a catalogue of some of the most popular songs from the 1960s and ’70s, including “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?” “Up On The Roof” and “You’ve Got A Friend,” Beautiful has scored in a season awash in revivals such as the smash hit Hedwig And The Angry Inch, and the costly box office failures of such large-scale shows as Woody Allen’s Bullets Over Broadway, and The Bridges Of Madison County.
“Beautiful has become a bonafide phenomenon and we couldn’t be more pleased and proud,” Blake said.
