PREVIOUS, Sunday, 4:15 PM PT: This weekend domestically is projected to be the lowest grossing of 2014, off 23% from a year ago. And yet, the international frame is up 18% across the Top 10 studio titles on 2013’s comparable period. Lucy, Hercules, The Expendables 3 and Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes brought action to the weekend that had no major debuts on the docket. At the same time last year, Elysium was No. 1, followed by White House Down, We’re The Millers, The Conjuring and One Direction: This Is Us. New to the overall charts this weekend were Korea’s Tazza: The Hidden Card and China’s But Always (see more below in the select key market round-ups).
It’s been a somewhat hazy, lazy end to summer overseas for Hollywood, although Lucy (a French production released in most markets by Universal) continues to fire up strong openings – Russia is next week – and Hercules showed muscle this frame, notably in Brazil. China, after an unofficial blackout period for part of the summer, continues to deliver with Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes at $72M after two frames, and a with bit of extra cash for Exp3 (although even final estimates are still not available there).
Next week will see the China bows of Into The Storm, Divergent and Lucy, as well as the international debuts of Laika’s much-trailered The Boxtrolls in the UK and Mexico among other territories. The Maze Runner will also start its rollout, and Cannes darling Pride hits the UK. Guardians Of The Galaxy, currently with a worldwide cume of $586.17M, opens in Japan on the 13th… and China is still to come. See below the earlier post for more on what’s happening in this week’s select markets of Korea, China and Spain.
PREVIOUS, Sunday, 12:38 PM PT: International weekend estimates are now all in with the notable reappearance of the Expendables 3 crew near the top of the charts. The film opened in China earlier this week and Rentrak is estimating an $11.5M weekend for a $33M cume since Sept 1. The weekend estimate would put it at No. 2, behind holdover Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes. We are expecting updated China figures a bit later. The last Exp3 installment opened to $13.77M and ultimately grossed a little over $53M in the Middle Kingdom. The international weekend estimate is $17M for an overseas cume of $88M and a worldwide take of $124.7M. That’s still well shy of the 2nd film’s eventual $305M gross and Japan is the only market remaining to bow. Elsewhere, Universal has the Patrick Hughes-helmed movie in Italy, Russia and Spain, where it added an estimated $2.1M at 966 dates this frame. The studio total is now $13.3M. UPDATE, Monday: Expendables bowed Thursday at No. 2 in Italy with $2M from 408 playdates. Russia’s cume is $7.4M and Spain’s 24-day total is $4M.
There were no major studio films making their first offshore foray this week. Lucy has jumped back to the top spot internationally with an added total of $25.5M in Universal and EuropaCorp territories combined. Of that, Universal’s portion is $23.8M at 4,889 dates in 50 territories. The studio cume is $144.3M and the overall total thus far is $192.2M, and the shoot-em-up is expected to cross $200M this week. Next week, the Scarlett Johansson-led film travels to Colombia, Norway and Russia.
Lucy notably brought her muscle to Korea this weekend with a No. 2 bow of $7.3M at 315 dates. The film fell in line behind local sequel Tazza: The Hidden Card. Lucy set yet another record for director Luc Bessson with his best opening ever in the market. Panama was also a new run with $627K at 80 dates and a No.1 slot.
In holdovers, Lucy stayed atop the UK box office for the 3rd consecutive week. The weekend rang up $1.9M at 495 dates for a 17-day total of $17.4M. In Mexico, the actioner held at No. 2 with $2.8M at 623 dates. The total there is $8.2M. Brazil’s 2nd frame was good for $1.9M at 334 dates and a cume of $5.2M. Japan added $1.5M at 205 dates for a total of $5.8M.
Hercules arrived in a swath of new markets this frame with $17.2M from 3,658 sites and an international to-date tally of $123.1M. Brazil gave Paramount its 4th biggest opening ever in the market. The Brett Ratner pic took $4.5M at 466 locations for a No. 1 berth. The German open was at No. 2, behind Guardians Of The Galaxy in its 2nd frame, with $2.7M from 399 locations. In Spain, the demi-god placed No. 2 with $1.5M at 340 sites. He came in behind Fox’s local hit El Nino in its 2nd run. Colombia was a No. 1 start with $1.1M. France was worth $1.2M in its 2nd frame at 487 dates. The cume there is now $5.6M. Japan and China are yet to release. The former welcomes Hercules on October 24 and a China date is to be confirmed.
Fox’s Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes bulked up with another $16.5M this frame playing on 6,193 screens in 38 markets. Now with a local cume of $72.1M, DOTPOTA added $13.5M in China this session, its 2nd. Fox says the Matt Reeves-helmed Apes sequel is on track to surpass Godzilla and The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug before the end of the week. In new openings DOTPOTA walked upright to Venezuela for a $ 1.14M start that was 4x bigger than Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes. The international cume is $437.5M with Japan releasing on Sept 19.
Warner Bros’ Into The Storm blew into Mexico this frame, landing a No. 1 spot with $3.7M from 1,470 screens. It knocked Lucy down to No. 2 and bested the openings of such comps as Super 8, The Happening and The Impossible. In Australia, it whipped up $1.9M from 336 screens to rank No. 2. The take is on par with The Happening and slightly ahead of The Impossible. In total this weekend, the Steven Quale-helmed disaster pic bested its estimate of $11.6M, logging $12.1M from 5,225 screens in 50 markets. The total overseas haul is now $66.4M. After a strong open in a crowded field last week, Korea is still the top market with $8.9M followed by Russia with $6.7M. China opens next week.
James Gunn-helmed Guardians Of The Galaxy set a new domestic record for Marvel this frame, now boasting four No. 1 weekends. Internationally, it grossed a further $11.5M to pass The Wolverine’s $282M with an offshore cume of $291.6M. Globally, it’s now at $586.17M, overtaking and Iron Man’s $585M. Germany has become the 7th highest-grossing market to date for GOTG after only its 2nd frame there. The ragtag bunch of space heroes are currently still playing in 69 markets. Japan opens next weekend with China still to come on Oct 10. Italy will be the last market to open on Oct 22.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cowabunga’d their way to an extra $8.9M from 4,899 dates in 48 territories, bringing the overseas total to $125.7M. Brazil is holding well with $1.4M in its 4th frame and plating at 647 sites. The cume to date there for the Jonathan Liebsesman-styled Ninjas on the half-shell is $17.2M. Australia bows on Thursday. Parts of Western Europe are still to come as are Japan and China, though a date has not yet been set for the latter.
Deliver Us From Evil delivered $6.55M from 43 territories, bringing the overseas cume to $34.3M. In openings, Germany debuted with $980k from 279 screens for No. 6. France bowed at No. 5 with $950k from 238 screens. Spain launched to $1.058M from 282 screens and staked out No. 3. It was 32% over Carrie. Other openings include Peru ($216K from 77), UAE ($199K from 29), Austria ($186K from 58), Thailand ($70k from 43) and Portugal ($85K from 27). In its 2d frame, Russia added $1.7M for a solid $6.7M cume. The horror pic directed by Scott Derrickson heads to Mexico next weekend, and Brazil on Sept 18.
Continuing on from last frame’s news of a handful of flourishing local-language pics, Fox International Productions had another strong weekend across multiple markets. Daniel Monzon’s El Nino held the No. 1 slot in Spain for a second week in a row with $2.978M and a cume of $9.5M. In Germany, Marco Petry’s Doktorspiele dropped 29% to earn $1.47M for a $4.5M cume. And in Mexico, Jorge Ramirez Suarez’s drama Guten Tag, Ramon grossed $750K, dropping less than 10% in its 3rd weekend of release. Its total there is $3.28M
The Fault In Our Stars beat it’s polar opposite competition (Expendables 3) in Italy this weekend when it bowed at No. 1 with $2.5M on 302 screens. Russia was also a new market for the Josh Boone-directed TFIOS with a No. 1 start of $963K at 1,016 locations. Overall, the frame was worth an extra $5.04M from 2,058 screens in 20 markets. The offshore cume is now $169.3M.
If I Stay brought tears to Brazil this frame with an opening haul of $960K from 226 screens. Per Warner, comps bested include The Vow, The Lucky One and The Notebook. Directed by RJ Cutler, it added a total $4.6M from 2,430 screens in 20 markets for an international cume of $10.8M. France, Germany, Italy and Spain roll out through September.
Let’s Be Cops dressed up for $4.2M on 1,875 screens in 27 markets. Scandinavia/Northern Europe have warmed to the Luke Greenfield-directed comedy with Sweden a No. 1 debut of $428K that was 21% bigger than Neighbors, per Fox. Holland is still No. 1 after four weeks with a cume of $2.13M, and the UK was down 39% from opening weekend with a total of $5.3M after two frames – small drops were found in most of the release markets. Russia logged $1.068M in its second weekend for a cume of $3.9M. The early international cume is $17.9M. The next major market to release is Italy on Sept 25.
Sony’s Sex Tape captured $3.2M from 54 markets bringing the overseas cume closer to $50M with $47.8M. As expected, the UK was a No. 1 debut for the Jake Kasdan-directed comedy with $1.6 for Wed-Sun. In Taiwan, Sex Tape bowed with $332K from 67 screens. France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Austria are limbering up for this week.
Step Up All In added $3.8M from 42 international territories and pushed the total to $63.5M. The dance/romance pic directed by Trish Sie boogied over to Korea this weekend — where it will have acted as an alternative to the aforementioned Tazza sequel and Lucy as well as strong local pics — and took $1.6M from 325 screens. Previous installment Step Up Revolution ultimately did over $6M there. In Singapore, where the last film exited the dance floor with about $2M, the opening this weekend was $654K on 35 screens, good for a No. 1 bow.
22 Jump Street continued its run this session with $3.1M from 27 markets. The overseas cume for the Phil Lord-helmed hit comedy is $128.7M. Brazil opened to $868K from 233 screens. That was No. 6, but repped 66% more coin than 21 Jump Street, according to Sony. Central America bowed with $198K from 84 screens — 19% above the final lifetime gross of the first film. France added $776K in its 2nd frame ($3.1M cume); Mexico in its 2nd frame delivered $264K (cume $1.1M).
Passing the $600M global mark this session, How To Train Your Dragon 2 snatched $2.8M from 3,338 screens in 40 territories. The International cume now stands at $432.8M, taking the worldwide cume above $607.5M to surpass Madagascar 2. Notably, the UK total of $41.1M is now 40% bigger than the first film, also directed by Dean DeBlois.
Warner’s local phenom Relatos Salvajes (Wild Tales) is still No.1 in Argentina in its 3rd frame. It’s also still tops in Uruguay and added an overall gross of $2.2M from 331 screens in those countries along with Chile and Peru. The drop was 19% for Damien Szifron’s film that debuted in Cannes. The cume to date is $9.4M. Upcoming key market openings include Spain and Brazil in October.
Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age Of Extinction is still playing at 762 international dates and took another $1.9M this frame. Cume is now $833.1M overseas.
Helmer John Erick Dowdle’s Parisian catacombs scarer As Above So Below wended its way to 13 more markets this frame. The weekend for Universal is $1.6M at 1,047 dates in 19 territories for a total of $4..589M. Next weekend, the film opens in 14 further territories including Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Turkey.
Indie darling Boyhood has now hit the $10M mark for Universal. In 15 markets this frame, it added $890K at 312 dates. Six new markets got the Richard Linklater coming-of-age film including Australia with 59 dates worth $443K including previews. The studio says it had the 3rd best per-screen average in the Top 10 and expects the film to have a long run in specialty cinemas Down Under. Israel also bowed with $73K at 13 dates. Boyhood saw $128K in Denmark, bowing fourth, from 19 dates. There are still 22 territories to release; next weekend, Boyhood visits Greece, Slovenia and Spain.
The Purge: Anarchy scared up an estimated $262K at 700 dates in 17 territories on Friday and raised the international total to $34.4M. Colombia greeted the Universal release from director James DeMonaco on Thursday with $114K at 60 dates. Ten more markets are on deck with Hong Kong, Indonesia and Panama next weekend.

Lucy had a strong opening in Korea but was shut out of the No. 1 spot by a local pic in what has become a fantastic several weeks for the homegrown. Tazza: The Hidden Card was tops with an $8M weekend, putting it in Rentrak’s Top 10. The film is the sequel to 2006’s Tazza: The High Rollers. The original sold 6.85M tickets and is the 26th biggest local title of all time. Set in the gambling underworld of Seoul, the crime drama is directed by Hyeong-Cheol Kang. Along with Lucy, and Tazza 2, My Brilliant Life also took advantage of the Chuseok harvest festival holiday that officially starts tomorrow. The latter, a drama directed by Je-yong Lee, is about a teenage couple whose baby has Progeria syndrome. It earned $4M in its Korean debut.
Expendables 3 has opened in China with what Rentrak says is an estimated $11.5M weekend. I’ve heard other estimates a bit closer to $15M, but either way it will be slightly over or under the last movie’s $13.77M debut in what was that movie’s biggest overseas market. It cumed out at just over $53M. With a Rentrak estimate of $33M for Exp3 since its Sept 1 bow, the movie is unlikely to reach that same level. It could be word of mouth on what was a poorly received big-ticket threequel elsewhere, but it could also be the fact that a copy of the film leaked online well ahead of its release. China is notorious for piracy and this movie was not in 3D which tends to get folks out of their homes in the Middle Kingdom. On the other hand, Guardians Of The Galaxy is set to bow in China on Oct 10, a good long time after its debuts elsewhere. Piracy is not expected to be a big factor as this surprising summer juggernaut has had huge word of mouth. In local pics this week, romancer But Always from director Snow Zou grossed $7.1M. It’s the story of two school friends in 1970s Beijing who lose touch but rekindle a romance in New York City in the new millennium where they are confronted with the choice of present or future love. Sounds akin to last year’s So Young which broke opening day records for a 2D Chinese movie at the time of its release in April. But Always also bowed in the U.S. his weekend in 19 theaters with $140K.
Regular readers of this column will know that I’m often bullish on local overseas titles that keep pace with Hollywood movies — on one hand because it’s a smart move for Hollywood to be in the local business, and on the other because movies that don’t get a global marketing campaign should not necessarily be discounted as unimportant (also, new talent, anyone?). They may not always be ripe to travel, but are a lesson in what turns on homegrown audiences. There are several examples of this in the past year, most notably Spanish Affairs, which Universal released in Spain to see it become the 2nd highest-grossing film of all time in the country. Warner Bros and Fox are also active on the local-lingo/local production front in Spain and it’s the latter that has a current winner in El Nino. Daniel Monzón’s thriller is a drug-trafficking pic set in the Gibraltar Straits. It has now earned 9.24M in Spain and held the No. 1 slot for a second frame in a row this week, beating the market debut of Hercules. Elsewhere in Latino territories, Damian Szifron’s comedy Relatos Salvajes (Wild Tales), a Warner Bros presentation of a K&S Films & El Deseo production, is still No.1 in Argentina in its 3rd frame. The Latin America cume is $9.5M to date with upcoming releases in Spain and Brazil in October. Sony Pictures Classics has the domestic rights.
