The Television Academy wants to continue its relationship with longtime outside General Counsel Dixon Q. Dern. The Academy has extended Dern’s contract through 2015. Dern has worked with the TV Academy for more than 30 years, providing counsel on all of its legal matters and business negotiations, including the most recent 8-year Primetime Emmy deal with the broadcast networks reached in 2011.
“Dixon is a vital part of our organization, combining excellent legal counsel with a deep understanding of the Academy and the industry. We look forward to his continued guidance throughout next year,” said Television Academy President and COO Maury McIntyre.
In addition to his oversight of the license agreements for the Primetime Emmy telecast, Dern has been instrumental in establishment of both the Hall of Fame and the Television Academy Honors. Additionally, Dern has handled legal matters for the TV Academy Foundation including its educational outreach programs and its Archive of American Television’s historic preservation program. He has also spearheaded trademark and copyright protection for the Academy, its Foundation and their many initiatives. In 2009, Dern was recognized with the Television Academy’s Syd Cassyd Founders Award for his many years of service to the organization.
