After an excellent $25.9M final weekend-opening gross in China this morning, DreamWorks Animation/Fox’s How To Train Your Dragon 2 roared into the biggest animated opening of all time in the territory. The total box office for Dragon 2 is now at around $171.2M domestically and sits in the No. 11 spot in the biggest openers of 2014 to date. It also ranks as the second-biggest animated pic of the year domestically behind Warner Bros’ The Lego Movie, which bowed February 7. Dragon 2‘s global cume topped $500M since bowing June 13.
The sequel’s strong performance overseas lifted DreamWorks Animation’s stock this AM, too. The stock perked up as much as 10% based on the China performance and the naming of Fazal Merchant as its new CFO.
