With Peter Capaldi set to debut as the newest Doctor Who on Saturday, the BBC today announced a behind-the-scenes online series that will follow every step of the creation of his first season as the Time Lord. Doctor Who Extra will be available exclusively on BBC iPlayer in the UK (no word yet on plans for diffusion outside Britain). Over the course of 12 programs, the show will be an inside take on Season 8 from the people who made it including Capaldi, Jenna Coleman and Samuel Anderson, plus guests Frank Skinner, Keeley Hawes, Michelle Gomez, Ben Miller, Foxes and others. Showrunner Steven Moffat and the directors also contribute about the on- and off-screen drama. The Extra webisodes will become available just after each episode has aired in the UK. This follows Doctor Who Confidential, a documentary series that complemented the modern series’ revival that ran on BBC Three until late 2011. Radio Times notes that fans (aka Whovians) “have been campaigning the revive” the after-show since it was axed in 2011.
ITV Studios Global Entertainment has renewed its deal with BBC Worldwide Australia and New Zealand for ITV Studios’ long-running soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale in Australia. UKTV in Australia will air five new seasons of both Coronation Street (1,300 half-hour episodes) and Emmerdale (260 half-hours) into early 2020. Coronation Street premiered in 1960, and Emmerdale bowed in 1972. Both have aired on UKTV as weekday strips since 2007.
