UPDATED, 8:19 PM: The Academy now says Jeffrey Kurland was elected tonight as First VP, Leonard Engelman and John Bailey as VPs, Dick Cook as Treasurer, and Bill Kroyer as Secretary. Kurland served as VP last year, Engelman and Cook were re-elected to their posts, and Bailey and Kroyer will be first-time officers.
PREVIOUSLY: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors has re-elected Cheryl Boone Isaacs as president, making her eligible to serve two additional one-year terms. The announcement was made via Twitter:
The longtime marketing executive won a historic election in July 2013 as the first African-American and only third woman to win the post (after Bette Davis in 1941 and Fay Kanin in 1979). It had been widely expected she would be re-elected. Academy presidents can serve four consecutive one-year terms as long as they have not been termed out on the Board Of Governors — as Hawk Koch was last year after serving only one year as president.
Boone Isaacs has been a member of the Board of Governors for 22 years — on and off, per AMPAS bylaws, since 1988 — having joined the Academy just a year earlier as part of its public relations branch. “It’s not the same as winning a statuette, but the feeling of becoming a member is that you’ve been accepted and appreciated by your peers in a way you may not have thought possible,” she said in an AwadsLine interview at Christmastime. “A colleague (originally) suggested I put my name up for a governor’s slot. And once a group of people has supported you, you’d better deliver.”
Boone Isaacs heads CBI Enterprises, where she has consulted on marketing efforts on such films including Best Picture Oscar winners The Artist and The King’s Speech. Earlier she did stints as president of theatrical marketing for New Line Cinema and EVP Worldwide Publicity at Paramount Pictures.
Academy CEO Dawn Hudson’s contract was renewed for three years in May. The results of other Academy officer elections will be revealed tonight.
