3RD UPDATE, 9:02 PM PT: International box office was even with last weekend across the Top 10 studio releases with Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes the big gorilla thanks to a strong China opening. Lucy was also in on the action again this frame with a cumulative $31.2M in Universal and EuropaCorp territories. Compared to last year, the session was up 39%. Players at that time included Elysium, One Direction: This Is Us and The Conjuring, with Monsters University adding another $10M in China.
Along with Apes this weekend in China, How To Train Your Dragon 2 was a strong performer and is expected to take the No. 2 spot with $6.3M in frame 3. After a period that saw a focus on boosting local movies, the market is now getting a steady influx of Hollywood titles – Expendables 3 opens there tomorrow (Monday) and Into The Storm blows in on Sept 12. Also in Asia, Lucy and Step Up: All In will sashay to Korea next weekend where local blockbusters are beginning to wane.
'Joker's Smile Widens To $351M Overseas, $544M Global; 'Gemini Man' Expands For $60M WW - International Box Office
There are no new wide rollouts next session overseas. Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno will infest Australia and the Philippines, while Colin Firth and Dan Stevens will bring chills to the UK in their respective thrillers Before I Go To Sleep and The Guest.
In expansions, Deliver Us From Evil – which had a good bow in Russia this frame – will travel to a dozen new markets including France, Germany and Spain. After crossing $100M overseas this session, Hercules will also go to Germany and Spain, along with Brazil where 22 Jump Street also has new dates booked. Sex Tape unspools in the UK and The Fault In Our Stars will look to dazzle in Russia.

2ND UPDATE, WRITETHRU 12:51 PM PT: Sony has added its numbers for the weekend with Deliver Us From Evil gripping Russia in a No. 1 bow, and the continued runs of 22 Jump Street and Sex Tape. Figures added throughout below.
1ST UPDATE, WRITETHRU 11:45 AM PT: Fox and Warner Bros have now weighed in with their international estimates.
Of note: Fox’s Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is thumping its chest with a China debut of $47M. That gave it the 4th best opening of all time for an imported film. Also in Asia, WB’s Into The Storm blew into Korea with a No. 1 bow of $5.2M from 566 screens, dethroning local titles The Pirates and Roaring Currents. More on those and other titles from the two studios is added throughout below.
New: If I Stay grossed $4.6M from 1,865 screens in 10 markets. The Chloë Grace Moretz drama from Warner earned $1.2M in Russia on 559 screens for the No. 3 spot. That pushed it past comp titles like The Vow, Dear John and The Notebook. Australia opened to $1.1M with 85K admissions from 200 screens to rank 4th. Mexico grossed $867K with 210K admissions from 496 screens. It was No. 3 and outperformed the same comp titles. The UK grossed $854k on 79K admissions from 338 screens.
Apes‘ China haul came from 7,000 screens. The opening falls behind Transformers: Age Of Extinction, Iron Man 3 and Transfomers: Dark Of The Moon. Back before the mega-boom in screen building, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, made $8.9M on its 2011 opening weekend from 2,600 dates. That film’s final cume was $32.2M in the Middle Kingdom. In total, the overseas weekend was worth $51.2M across 29 markets taking the international cume to $408M, and the worldwide cume past $600M. China is thus far the 2nd biggest ex-U.S. market for DOTPOTA; the UK has a total $54.6M after seven weeks in release. Japan and Venezuela open in September.
Lucy crossed $150M at the international box office this weekend for a cume of $151.6M. It added $27.2M at 4,700 Universal dates in 48 territories bringing the studio’s portion of the cume to $107.2M. Combined with grosses from Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp which is releasing in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Hong Kong, the total weekend estimate is $31.2M. Continuing a trend for the Scarlett Johansson-led actioner, Lucy gave Besson his biggest opening for a film he directed in all the territories that opened this weekend.
Brazil, Croatia, Indonesia, Mexico, South Africa, Thailand and Trinidad were No. 1 openings. Egypt and Greece came in at No. 2 and in Japan, where there are strong local films in theaters, Lucy is the No. 1 non-Japanese film, and the No. 3 film behind two local films. Mexico was tops among new markets with $4.3M at 605 dates and 34% market share; Japan opened with $2.6M at 205 dates; and Brazil debuted with $2.4M at 348 dates and 24% market share.
In holdovers, Lucy stayed at No. 1 in the UK/Ireland with an additional $3.3M at 504 dates for a 10-day total of $13.1M. In Poland, it’s the No. 1 film for the third week in a row. And, in Besson’s narive France, it has held the No. 1 spot for the 4th consecutive week with a $35.1M cume in 26 days. Ahead of the weekend, it was the No. 3 film of the year at the French box office behind two local-language comedies. Next weekend, Lucy shoots over to Korea and Panama.
Guardians Of The Galaxy now has an estimated global gross of $547.7M after crossing the $500M mark during the last week. Overseas, it’s at $273.1M, just a notch behind the domestic take of $274.6M. Internationally, it added $19.7M this weekend from 68 markets, aided by new openings in Germany and Austria. In Germany, the space romp – which got a shout-out from Al Pacino here at the Venice Film Festival — opened to $7M, 74% above the debut weekend of The Winter Soldier. GOTG has now exceeded the total offshore cumes of Thor ($268M), Iron Man ($267M) and Captain America: The First Avenger ($194M). The UK and Russia are still tops with Japan, Italy and China yet to bow.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles garnered $13M this weekend from 43 markets in 5,422 locations, bringing its international cume to date to $112.1M. Adding in the domestic tally after Monday, that will bring the Italian-named reptiles to a $278M worldwide gross and accumulating. Korea opened to $2.6M from 500 locales and it had a very strong hold in Brazil where it was off only 34% to kick in $2.4M from 429 dates. The cume to date in Brazil is $14.8M. Russia brought in yet another $1M in its 4th frame to take its total cume to $27.6M. It’s still playing in 1,216 theaters. Its next opening will be on Sept 11 in Australia, followed by Italy in Sept 18.
Opening in four key markets, Into The Storm whipped up $12.9M with 1.7M admissions from 4,400 screens in 51 markets. The international cume to date is $47.7M. Along with Korea, Italy bowed in 2nd with $1.2M from 141K admissions on 345 screens; Brazil notched $1M from 182K on 294 screens; and Spain opened to $600K with 65K admissions on 236 screens. Russia leads overseas cumes with $6.6M. Upcoming releases include Mexico and Australia on Sept 4 and China on Sept 12.
How To Train Your Dragon 2 is expected to place as the No. 2 movie in China this weekend with an additional $6.3M on 3,246 screens. That takes its local cume to $57.33M after three frames. HTTYD2 had no new openings this frame, but did see Italy burst back into the No. 1 spot with $981K from 592 locations. There were also jumps in the UK, for a local cume of $40.4M, and France, where it rose by 15% in its 9th weekend for a total tally of $25.9M. The full weekend take for HTTYD2 overseas was $10.5M. The international cume, including the non-Fox markets, is at $420.2M.
Hercules charged ahead with another $9.8M this weekend to gross over $100M in its international run. Specifically, it is now able to crow about $103.8M from 2,260 locations. It opened in France to $3.6M from 487 runs, which was 5% ahead of G.I. Joe Retaliation, according to the studio. In Mexico, it held very well in its 2nd frame, down 51% for a $1.9M gross at 657 dates. It next opens in the Latin American market with Brazil and Argentina on Sept 4; it will also bow in Germany on the same date.
Let’s Be Cops drove the squad car to about a dozen new precincts this frame for a $6.57M sting. The UK and Russia were notably strong. The former served up $2.78M on 425 screens for 2nd place, and the latter added $1.84M from 1,016 screens for No. 3. For the record, Let’s Be Cops booked No. 1s in Puerto Rico and Papau New Guinea. The international cume stands at $9.8M.
Sony’s Deliver Us From Evil had a strong weekend with an estimated $5.2M in 29 markets, bringing the overseas cume to $25M. спасибо, Russia, basically. The launch was No. 1 in that market at $3.6M. That’s 10 times the opening of comp titles The Exorcism Of Emily Rose and thrice The Devil Inside. Chile also debuted in 1st place, taking in $255K on 55 screens – 64% bigger than The Devil Inside and more than double Insidious: Chapter 2, the studio says. Other openings include Ukraine ($100K), and Turkey ($88K). Upcoming releases throughout September are France, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Mexico, Brazil, Netherlands, and Japan.
The summer’s big comedy 22 Jump Street added an estimated $4.5M in 31 markets for Sony this weekend. The international cume is now $124.1M. France launched 5th in the market with $1.9M, 83% bigger than the opening of the first film. Mexico debuted in 6th place with $560K. In holdovers, Germany fell 39% in its 5th frame to bring the market total to $14.2M. Brazil is on deck next weekend, followed by the rest of Latin America in the month ahead.
The light is not fading for The Fault In Our Stars with an added $3.58M in 13 markets. The international total is now $162.8M. France showed strong legs with a 14% drop and $1.88M on 299 screens for a cume of $5.23M.
Transformers: Age of Extinction is continuing its amazing run overseas, grabbing another $2.6M on 1,295 runs to bring its international cume to $828.1M. It’s already a billion dollar baby and now that baby is just getting fatter. In its 2nd frame, Venezuela was off 49%, delivering $1M from 70 cribs to bring its total to $4.7M.
Warner’s Argentinean production Relatos Salvajes (Wild Tales) continued wild business after its record breaking debut last weekend. The Cannes title added $2.5M from 375 screens in four markets in release including Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Peru. The cume to date to $6.3M.
A handful of Fox International Productions releases are performing around the globe with El Niño opening at No. 1 in Spain for nearly 50% of the market share. The Daniel Monzón-directed thriller earned $2.34M at 479 dates. Ian McShane, Luis Tosar and Sergi López star.
Sex Tape, which still has the UK, France, Germany and Italy to come in the next few weeks, reeled in an estimated $2.3M in 46 markets this session. The international total now stands at $42.8M. Argentina bowed at No. 4 with $215, 160% more than Bad Teacher, Sony says. Ecuador launched with $76K on 33 screens. Brazil slipped 46% in its 2nd frame, earning $450K. The market cume is $1.6M. The Netherlands fell 39% in its 4th weekend, adding $240 for a $3M cume.
In Germany, FIP’s Doktorspiele opened at No. 2 just behind the GOTG with $2.1M on 406 screens. Directed by Marco Petry, the comedy had the 3rd best opening for a local film this year. Also in Germany, Rico, Oskar Und Die Tieferschatten continues to play after eight weeks with a cume of $4.7M. In Mexico, FIP’s Guten Tag, Ramon had a 26% drop in its 2nd frame with $834K for a cume to date of $2.31M.
In Japan, WB’s Rurouni Kenshin 2 took another $2.1M for a cume of $41.4M in three Asian markets in release. In Japan, the sequel has now surpassed the first installment by 41%.
In Russia, where Fox is releasing on behalf of A Company, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For clocked $1.09M at 1,623 dates for a cume of $5.84M after two frames.
Universal’s As Above/So Below opened in five overseas markets this frame. Domestically, it’s looking at a $8.35M three-day cume. Overseas, the weekend estimate is $1.4M at 552 dates in a total eight territories. The early cume is $2.4M. The UK/Ireland bowed to $710K at 340 dates in 8th position; Norway was No. 9 with $55K at 54 dates and the UAE bowed to $65K at 34 dates for a No. 5 berth. Universal screened footage of the micro-budget horror film that takes place in the catacombs below Paris – a place even this longtime Parisian has never ventured — for European exhibitors in Barcelona in June. Directed by John Erick Dowdle it’s a Legendary Pictures production.
The Purge: Anarchy grossed an estimated $920K at 1,150 dates in 23 territories for an international total of $34M. Korea opened No. 9 with $370K at 181 dates and the Philippines opened No. 5 with $129K at 59 dates. There are 11 territories still to come with Colombia next.
As Neighbors winds down its run, it added $820K in 12 territories for an international total of $118M. Venezuela will be the final release on Sept 12.
Boyhood grossed $310K at 222 dates in 10 territories for a Universal total of $9M. New Zealand opened to $94K at 11 dates with the 5th best per screen average in the Top 10.
