EXCLUSIVE: Country music star Miranda Lambert is collaborating on the female comedy script Something In The Water penned by celebrated country music video director Trey Fanjoy and screenwriter Cindy McCreery. The strong female-led project is a multi-generational ensemble piece set in the heartland; Lambert would take on one of the roles in the romp about five women challenging their men in a bass fishing competition. The project, which Fanjoy also hopes to direct, is said be in the vein of Bridesmaids meets Steel Magnolias.
Lambert and Fanjoy have long collaborated. In fact, for about a decade. Fanjoy directed Lambert’s first music video for the singer’s first single and has, subsequently, helmed the country artist’s videos on her game-changing hits — “Kerosene,” “The House That Built Me,” “Fastest Girl In Town,” “Over You,” “Mama’s Broken Heart” and the singer’s most recent hit video “Somethin’ Bad” with Carrie Underwood (which has been viewed over 10 million times since bowing last month and has pulled record-breaking view numbers for Viacom and its County Music Television). Together, Lambert and Fanjoy have racked up numerous awards, most recently this past June when Lambert won Female Video of the Year for the song “Automatic,” directed (once again) by Fanjoy.
“With over a dozen award-winning collaborations with Miranda, I’ve no doubt Trey’s transition into features will be equally successful,” said Lambert’s manager Marion Kraft of Shopkeeper Management.
Bass fishing is one of the most popular sports in the Midwest and in the South and is a growing sport around the world. Particularly interesting is that bass fishing is a popular sport in Asia so this project seems finely tuned to capitalize on the craze not only in this county but in the all-important Asian territories. In addition, figure in the country music superfans, and this project is a no-brainer.
Lambert is married to fellow country superstar Blake Shelton. Fanjoy is also the most celebrated female video director in the country music business. She has helmed music videos for a who’s who in country from Keith Urban to Taylor Swift, Trisha Yearwood, Faith Hill, George Strait, Alan Jackson, Dolly Parton, Brooks and Dunn, Lady Antebellum, Sheryl Crow, Steve Earle, Garth Brooks, and even Jack White and Jimmy Buffet — to name only a few. Last year, Fanjoy won directing awards for both Male and Female Videos of the year from the Country Music Television Awards.
Between the two of them, I would expect a killer soundtrack. Fanjoy is also looking at two other projects to make her feature film debut with — one the faith-friendly Take It Back and the musical fantasy Teenage Dream which has Randy Jackson (American Idol) and Rafaella DeLaurentis on as producers.
Lambert just released her fifth album and made country music history as all five of her releases have debuted at #1 on Billboard Country chart.
Lambert also was a guest star on Dick Wolf’s Law And Order: SVU. She is repped by WME and Shopkeeper Management. Fanjoy is repped by CAA. McCreery is repped by APA and Underground Films and Management.
