Talpa Media Group has tapped veteran unscripted producer Jay Bienstock as new CEO for Talpa Media USA. The top position at Talpa Media’s U.S. outpost had been vacant since the departure of CEO Simon Jones last year. Bienstock comes from A. Smith & Co., where he most recently served as Managing Director. At Talpa Media USA, he will oversee the company’s current slate, which includes the Emmy-winning NBC series The Voice and Fox’s upcoming Utopia. Both series were created by John de Mol, owner of Talpa Media Group. “We have been looking for a talented creative executive but also one with the business acumen of Jay to join Talpa and lead our U.S. division,” said de Mol. “We are excited to have Jay on board and look forward to the success we believe Jay will bring us within the Hollywood community.”
Bienstock, who began his career as a producer on VH1’s signature show Behind The Music, did a stint with veteran reality producer Mark Burnett. He was part of the original team that launched CBS’ Survivor, on which he served as showrunner and for which he won an Emmy. He also produced Eco-Challenge: Borneo and developed and executive produced NBC’s The Apprentice. Bienstock recently served as co-managing director alongside Eugene Young of Hell’s Kitchen producer A. Smith & Co. and became sole managing director when Young left to run Ryan Seacrest‘s company in February. Before that, Bienstock and Young formed and ran Bienstock Young Media for three years.
Bienstock has developed and executive produced such series as There Goes the Neighborhood, Dogs in the City, and The American Baking Competition for CBS and Bachelor Pad for ABC. He called working with de Mol “the pinnacle of my career.”
