EXCLUSIVE: Aurora Perrineau has been cast in sci-fi romance Equals following her gig rocking out as Shana in the upcoming Jem And The Holograms movie. Equals, from director Drake Doremus (Like Crazy), is set in a future society where emotions have been eradicated and one man, Silas (Nicholas Hoult), finds himself suffering from “Switched-On Syndrome.” Kristen Stewart plays Nia, another of the “infected” who is able to hide her condition. Perrineau’s credits include Pretty Little Liars and indie thriller A House Is Not A Home. She’ll play Iris, a new mother whose baby is born crying — a sign the tyke can feel those dreaded emotions. Kate Lyn Sheil also recently joined the project, which starts filming next month in Japan and Singapore. Perrineau’s repped by APA, Freeze Frame Entertainment and Manatt, Phelps & Phillips.
Cloris Leachman, James Wolk (Mad Men), Mickey Sumner (Frances Ha), Judd Nelson (The Breakfast Club), and René Auberjonois (Star Trek) have boarded indie comedy This Is Happening, the directorial debut of Ryan Jaffe. Jaffe also wrote and is producing the pic about a people-pleasing brother (Wolk) and pot-dealing sister (Sumner) who embark on a road trip to take their grandmother (Leachman) to an assisted-living facility. Jaffe penned the 2008 Fox Atomic Rainn Wilson comedy The Rocker. He’s producing for his Unguarded Content shingle alongside partner Scott Einziger, Lisa Barrett McGuire, and Matthew Weinberg. Rhino Films’ Stephen Nemeth is exec producer. Jaffe is repped by Paradigm, Mosaic, and attorney P.J. Shapiro.
