You know how the San Antonio Spurs dominated the Miami Heat in last night’s NBA Finals? That’s pretty much how the blowout Game 5 dominated the night, ratings-wise. ABC’s 8-10:52 PM ET broadcast of the game, in which the Spurs won their fifth NBA Championship by extinguishing the Heat 104-87, is the biggest game of this year’s series, and was Sunday’s dominant No. 1 TV program in Total Viewers (17.9 million) and across each of the key adult demographics: A18-34 (6.6 rating), A18-49 (6.8 rating) and A25-54 (7.2 rating), according to fast nationals. Game 5 was up year to year in total viewers (vs. 16.3 million) and 8% in the demo (vs. 6.3 rating). On average, the 2014 NBA Finals grew over the first 5 games of last year’s Spurs-Heat series by 3% in Total Viewers (15.5 million vs. 15.1 million).
For the night, ABC more than tripled runner-up CBS in total viewers (212% – 13.4 million vs. 4.3 million) and outscored the other broadcast networks combined in the demo by 143% (5.1/17 vs. 2.1/8 – CBS, NBC and Fox combined). Sunday marked ABC’s most watched non-Oscar Sunday in 3 years. The broadcast marked the 42nd consecutive time the NBA Finals game has won its night across the entire television landscape, more than doubling its broadcast competition. Not surprisingly, the top-rated local market was San Antonio (42.6), followed closely by Miami (27.6) — followed by Austin (22.0) Oklahoma (17.7) and West Palm Beach (17.1). ABC noted the 2014 NBA Finals was the most-social TV program of the night, with 6,399,537 tweets, while amassing 16,609,206 tweets over the entire 5-game series.
Meanwhile, Fox’s 7 PM Enlisted wrangled a 0.4/2 and 1.186 million viewers — on par with previous week’s demo and up 200,000 viewers. NBC’s Believe finale, at 9 PM, scored a 0.7/2 — down 22% compared to its most recent original’s 0.9/3, and tying a series low. After which, the network’s Crisis clocked a 0.7/2, dropping 13% from its most recent original, to tie its lowest rating to date.
