Matthew Warchus, currently represented on Broadway with the hit musical Matilda, will take over the reins from Spacey in the fall of 2015. Spacey has run the estimable joint for a decade. Warchus made his Broadway directing debut in 1998 with Art and in 2009 helmed the acclaimed production of Yasmina Reza’s God Of Carnage starring the late James Gandolfini with Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis and Marcia Gay Harden. Warchus also staged the Broadway stinker Ghost: The Musical. Warchus has just made a return to features after 15 years with Pride which is closing the Directors’ Fortnight section of Cannes tomorrow. After the Pride screening, Warchus told my colleague Nancy Tartaglione that he will quickly get back to work on developing the Groundhog Day musical.
Oscar winner Spacey (The Usual Suspects, American Beauty), whose Richard III ran at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, has been finding new stardom on the small screen as the draw for the Netflix series House Of Cards. In 2008 Warchus staged David Mamet’s Speed-The-Plow with Spacey and Jeff Goldblum. Spacey is about to open a limited-run one-man show at the Old Vic as famed Scopes Monkey Trial defense lawyer Clarence Darrow, running May 28-June 15.
