stationsofthecrossFilm Movement has acquired lauded festival award-winner Stations Of The Cross, from director Dietrich Brueggemann. The religious drama about a 14-year-old girl on a mission to become close to God premiered this year at the Berlin Film Festival where it won the Silver Bear and took home the Ecumenical Jury Award. Modern day-set tale is told in 14 single shot tableaus paralleling Christ’s journey to the crucifixion. Film Movement is plotting a theatrical, digital and home video release for 2015. Film Movement’s Adley Gartenstein made the pact with Beta Cinema’s Thorsten Ritter.

Cannes2014_badgeAttorneys Tom Ara and Robert Sherman have joined the Entertainment and Media Practice at Greenberg Traurig and will be based in the LA office. The hires are part of the firm’s strategic expansion of its entertainment and media finance practice. Ara and Sherman’s clients include The Weinstein Company, Indomina, Cutting Edge and AMBI Distribution. Prior to joining Greenberg Traurig, both attorneys, who are here in Cannes this week, were partners in Reed Smith LLP’s entertainment and media finance group. Associate Rosalind H. Read has also joined the firm and will work with Ara and Sherman.

MichaelTheLastPhotoShootsLightning Entertainment has acquired international sales rights to Craig J Williams’ documentary Michael: The Last Photo Shoots, a behind-the-scenes look at Michael Jackson’s final magazine cover shoots and the struggles he endured to make them happen. The docu captures the September 2007 sessions with Vogue and Ebony Magazine as Jackson prepared for his 2007 U.S. comeback after years of living in seclusion overseas. The deal was negotiated by Lightning EVP and GM Ken DuBow and general counsel AnaLisa Valle with producers Ray Markovich and Williams.

charlotte mickieCharlotte Mickie has joined Mongrel International as president. The veteran exec will oversee acquisitions and sales and is in Cannes with Mongrel’s first title, Aisling Walsh’s Maudie. Toronto-based distributor Mongrel Media launched the new international division earlier this month to focus on Canadian and world cinema. Mickie has previously had posts at Alliance Atlantis, Celluloid Dreams and most recently eOne. She exited eOne Films International as EVP in January.

sam neillRed Bull Media House’s film production label CineMater has cast Sam Neill in thriller DxM. Principal photography starts in June with CineMater selling here in Cannes. Directed and co-written by Andrew Goth, DxM is described as a high-octane contemporary thriller that explores the real world possibilities of quantum mechanics. The film follows a group of young bio-engineers, who realize that quantum theory can be used to transfer motor-skills from one brain to another. However, dark forces emerge that threaten to subvert the technology they’ve discovered into a means of mass control. The cast also includes Tom Payne (The Physician); Melia Kreiling (Guardians Of The Galaxy); Antonia Campbell-Hughes (3096); Dominique Tipper (Vampire Academy); Oliver Stark (My Hero); and Ryan Doyle in his first feature. DxM will be shot using new 360 degree camera technology in certain sequences.
