'X-Men: Days Of Future Past Wipes Up At Weekend Box Office, CBS' Les Moonves, Disney's Bob Iger Among Highest-Paid CEOS In 2013, '24: Live Another Day' Debut Gets DVR Bump In Live+7. Dominic Patten reports.
OPENING: X-Men: Days Of Future Past (FOX) Fox’s estimates were $91.4M 3-day, $111M and it ended at $90.8M and $110.5 for the 4-day to become the No. 5 all-time Memorial Day opener; Blended (WB), we estimated $14M+ for the 3-day, $17M to $18M 4-day. WBros. had it at $18.1M and it ended at $14.2M and $17.7M. NOTEWORTHY: Neighbors (UNI) crossed $100M; Chef (OPRD) expansion to land it in the Top Ten.
FINAL UPDATE, TUES., 2:17 PM: Final numbers are in and Memorial Day weekend is off 26.8% from last year. X-Men: Days Of Future Past tallied $110.5M for the four-day Memorial Day holiday, and $90.8M for the three-day. Blended came in at $17.7M, lower than the $18.1M Warner Bros. predicted yesterday, so we’re glad we stuck to our estimates across the board for all films. The question is what the second weekend drop for X-Men will be when Angelina Jolie arrives in Disney’s Maleficent. Without further ado, here is the final Top 10 Box office chart and will be updated to Top 20 when we receive the Rentrak numbers.
OPENING NEXT WEEKEND: Maleficent (DIS), the PG-rated film from Disney starring Angelina Jolie that is already scaring kids just on its trailer alone; A Million Ways To Die (UNI), Seth MacFarlane’s western. Mel Brooks he ain’t, but either you love him or hate him, right? Should be a fun box office weekend. Finally! 5th UPDATE, 11:25 AM: The Box Office chart has been added below. The Memorial Day weekend is actually down from last year by 26.8%. (we predicted 27%). Last year at this time, we had Fast and Furious 6, The Hangover 3, Star Trek Into Darkness, Epic, and Iron Man 3 in the top Ten. Final numbers will be in tomorrow for the Box office Top 20, but in the meantime, the chart is more in-depth this time for the Top Ten, including night by night grosses, percentages increases and decreases, and the 3-day weekend gross and 4-day estimates.
4th UPDATE, MONDAY 8:00 AM: Final numbers will be in tomorrow but it looks as though this Memorial Day weekend is down 27% overall from last year. At the end of this year, will it be any better or will DreamWorks’ Jeffrey Katzenberg be right when he boldly stated (to much criticism) that this is not a growth business? X-Men: Days of Future Past will come in right around $91.4M for the three-day and $111M, according to Fox, which is right on the money. It is now No. 5 of the best Memorial Day openers ever, besting The Hangover 2 and the second highest X-Men debut in the franchise’s 14-year history (see charts below). The percentage decline from Saturday to Sunday was only 11%. During the Memorial Day holiday, traditionally Sunday is always a stronger moviegoing day so pics can get a decent bump in attendance and then it tapers off on Monday.
It now logs a whopping $302M in four days worldwide (see international story here). About $9M of the domestic gross (8%) came from large format screens and about $15M worldwide, according to Fox. They didn’t have IMAX as Godzilla held its grip onto those this weekend. The demo for X-Men was 56% male and 44% female, which is among the highest percentage of females over the life of the franchise. Also, 61% of the moviegoers came from the 17 to 34 demo and it played across all cultures. “It really succeeded in bringing a general audience out and it was truly a global team effort,” said Spencer Klein, sr. vp/general sales manager for Fox.
Added Chris Aronson, Fox’s president of domestic distribution: “If you really think about it, it was a very complex plot and we were able to translate that across many cultures and many countries. It’s quite an extraordinary achievement to get universal acceptance like that, and the credit deserves to be given to the entire Fox marketing and distribution team as well as the filmmakers.” Nicely done, Mr. Aronson, and welcome back. And the filmmakers? The director/producer is Bryan Singer, the writer/producer is Simon Kinberg, and the producers are Hutch Parker and Lauren Shuler Donner.Godzilla, the WBros./Legendary Pic fell off big in its second weekend — 67% — for a 3-day total of $30.9M to $31.1M and a four-day of $38.7M to $39.4M. It fell 12% from Saturday to Sunday so percentage declines today will determine the outcome. Worldwide, it’s now at $167.7M, having done a bit better than estimated yesterday from 64 markets overseas.
The studio’s other weekend opener, the Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore comedy Blended, looks to end the 3-day with around (if not right on the money) what we estimated earlier — $14M and $17.5M. It also only dropped 10% from Saturday to Sunday. Not that it really matters, but there is still some question whether the WBros. offering will be in the No. 3 position or the No. 4 position when the dust settles Monday morning, as it is so close to the grosses of Uni’s Neighbors, which will end the weekend with almost $117M. Optimistic Warner Bros. has the final number higher than anyone else, at $18.1M for Blended.
Rounding out the Top Five is The Amazing Spider-Man with about $7.8M for the 3-day and $9.8M for the four-day. 
Sony has it as $10M. The worldwide cume is at $680M. I don’t see it squeezing out another $72M out worldwide, but maybe I’m wrong. Million Dollar Arm only dropped 34% in its second weekend which is a very good hold, but the Disney fish-out-of-water story is still having a hard time breathing as its two-week cume is only $22.1M (after the four-day). And, finally, Chef from Open Road, has been getting positive word of mouth to feed a three day gross estimate of $2.2M and should end the long holiday around $2.9M; its total cume is $4.2M in three weeks. 3RD UPDATE, SUNDAY 7:58 AM: X-Men: Days of Future Past is estimated to have a $90M three-day and a $108M to $110M four-day as numbers roll in this morning with two more movie going days to go this Memorial Day weekend so Sunday’s attendance is going to be better than usual on this long weekend. Fox’s X-Men dropped, as reported last night, about 18%. This estimate puts it in line for a $90.7M three-day and a $110M four-day to become the second biggest three-day opener for the franchise, behind X-Men: The Last Stand and the fifth biggest opener for a Memorial Day weekend, knocking out Hangover 2 (see chart as you click through).
With a strong international showing (those numbers will be along shortly), it’s at $171M in 119 markets for an estimated $261.7M worldwide gross already which is good because its budget was around $225M. Also, they had a large talent participation pool, but no first-dollar gross deals as I understand it, but similar talent deals to most large budget pics. Anyway, in 64 markets last weekend, Godzilla marked the biggest international opener of 2014 with $103.4M. X-Men is in 36 more countries so I should hope so. Kudos all around on this opening to the director/producer Bryan Singer, writer/producer Simon Kinberg, producers Hutch Parker, Lauren Shuler Donner, and Fox’s marketing and distribution teams.

Meanwhile, while X-Men lost 18% last night, Blended was up the same percentage amount to gross an estimated $5.1M on Saturday and is is in line to gross $14.2M for the three-day and estimated at $17.5M for the holiday at the moment. The Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore comedy, which garnered an A- CinemaScore so audiences did like this film, will come in at No. 3 besting Neighbors which will see more of a $13.7M weekend and a $17M four-day gross to easily cross the $100M barrier. The Sandler/Barrymore combination is no Tracy/Hepburn, but they had a good run together. The two of them together just seems so 50 First Dates dated at this point so perhaps when they are older, we’ll see them reunited for a Something’s Gotta Give type of film.
Warner Bros./Legendary Pics’ Godzilla took a strong percentage hit and will end the weekend down about 66% for a $31.4M three-day and a four-day of around $39M. It’s cume after this weekend will be around $156.7M after its second weekend out. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is at $187M after four weeks and looks to gross closer to $205M+ all in now domestically. All three pictures — X-Men, Godzilla and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 are going to be looking to international markets to make up their budgets.
Two other noteworthy players this weekend: Disney’s Million Dollar Arm had a decent hold on the same number of screens, dropping only 34% for the three-day weekend and Open Road’s Chef is enjoying positive word of mouth in its limited run for a $2.2M three-day meal (per screen is $4,538). Next weekend has the dark Disney fantasy film Maleficent and the weekend after that comes the Tom Cruise sci-fi actioner Edge of Tomorrow as we are in full summer movie swing. Chart is on its way:

2nd UPDATE, SAT, 11:35 PM: International estimates for X-Men will arrive in the morning and is expected to be huge. Domestically, X-Men‘sSaturday take is around $29M tonight for Fox, down roughly 18% (Godzilla was down 17% from Friday to Saturday in its debut weekend), so the final 4-day tally is towards the lower end of estimates at the moment while the other opener Blended, with a $5.2M Saturday is heading towards the higher end of its estimated gross of $18M (and change). It’s still bickering with Neighbors for the No. 3 spot in the food chain for the three-day with both around $14M at the moment; Blended still looks like it will best Neighbors for the 4-day. Certainly hope so, given that Neighbors is in its 3rd week and the Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore comedy is opening … or not exactly … really, you know, opening. A bit soft.
Godzilla will gross an estimated $11.8M from Saturday and is looking now more like $31M+ for the three-day and $39M+ for the four-day as it sinks into a percentage decline of maybe 68% in its second weekend out. International numbers will come in tomorrow morning for the lizard, too. And rounding out the Top Five right now is The Amazing Spider-Man 2, taking in another $3M for maybe a $7.5M three-day and a $9.6M four-day, bringing its total cume stateside to $186.8M. Also noteworthy is Chef which is moving slowly but surely up the ranks to maybe No. 8 now and a $4.5M four-day Memorial Day holiday meal.
As always, these estimates are not set in stone — it’s not an exact science — and it could change when distribs have a better look at all the late night numbers tonight. Until then … good night.
1st UPDATE: SAT., 7:09 AM: Today’s grosses will give a better indication of what the four-day weekend will bring for X-Men: Days of Future Past. The Fox franchise grabbed around $36M last night. Depending what the percentage decline is tonight, we will see how much over $100M the four-day holiday haul will bring for the mutant king. It had an overall A CinemaScore, which means it will benefit from good word of mouth. Waiting to see international numbers and will post as they come in. And for the three-day, it could end up being the highest grossing pic of 2014, surpassing Captain America: The Winter Soldier, depending on Saturday’s movie going. For the four-day, it will go well over $100M, just depends on how much over. Fox is saying $110M total this morning. Indicated by the chart below for Memorial Day openers, you can see where it will play as far as top grossers for the holiday goes:
Between X-Men and Godzilla, the two pics are taking all the air out of the marketplace so much so that the Adam Sandler /Drew Barrymore comedy Blended is finding it hard to breathe; the Warner Bros.’ pic has an A- CinemaScore so movie goers like this film, but it’s not getting the kind of traction that was expected. Meanwhile, some positions have changed in the line up from last night; Disney’s Million Dollar Arm looks to drop only 33% in its second weekend, but the Warner Bros./Legendary pic Godzilla is going to dip about 64% for the 3-day which has gotta sting. PREVIOUSLY 11:38 PM: X-Men: Days of Future Past looks to take in $36M Friday (Thursday late nights grossed $8.1M). If the picture drops only 10% on Saturday and Sunday, it could become the biggest opening of 2014, surpassing Disney/Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier for an expected $97M+ 3-day gross and a $117M to $120M 4-day gross. If it drops a higher percentage on Saturday, it could end up at $95M or around maybe $110M to $114M. We will have a better idea in the morning and after seeing Saturday’s numbers, but right now it looks like it will end up in the top five highest-grossing films ever during the Memorial Day weekend. The fifth spot is now held by The Hangover 2 which opened to an $85.9M 3-day and a $103.4M 4-day. The fourth highest-grosser for the holiday is Fast and Furious 6 which bowed last year to $97.3M for the three-day and $117M for the four-day.
This seventh film in this franchise, which was directed by Bryan Singer, also appears to become the second best X-Men opener behind X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006 which opened to a 3-day total of $102.7M on Memorial Day weekend 2006. The welcome gross of Days of Future Past, which has everything going for it, including good reviews, a killer cast of Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Ellen Page, Sir Ian McKellan, Halle Berry, Patrick Stewart, and Peter Dinklage (to name a few) and an A CinemaScore, is great news for Fox and the franchise itself.
The only thing it didn’t have was IMAX screens which Godzilla has this weekend; however, it is showing on 352 large format screens provided by other exhibitors.
The other weekend opener, Blended, the comedy starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore is poised to take the third spot for Warner Bros. with roughly $13M+ for the three-day and about $16M to $18M for the 4-day in a weekend where X-Men and Godzilla are taking a huge bite — $150M together — out of the marketplace. And it had a strong A- CinemaScore. Well done for this counter-programming mixer which was helmed by Frank Coraci who also directed the duo in their successful debut together in the sweet romantic comedy The Wedding Singer back in 1998.
Meanwhile, in its second weekend, Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla is expected to drop over 60% … maybe 63% … that hurts. However, the monster will have made about $160M domestically in two weeks time compared to Sony/Marvel’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 which will have made around $187M in four weeks. Big news: Disney’s Million Dollar Arm, in its second weekend on the same number of screens, has a terrific hold for the three-day, expected only to drop 26%. That’s a home run on word of mouth.
