The Presidents Day weekend was rather quiet for the Specialty Box Office in a holiday otherwise dominated by Legos. Only one newcomer bothered to report 3-day numbers Sunday, though they were decently solid. China Lion’s Valentine’s offering Beijing Love Story brought out its niche following of audiences who gravitate to China’s big screen features. The film grossed $128K for a $14,222 PTA. “We’re in our core communities and pushing our grassroots outreach there,” China Lion’s Robert Lundberg said this week.
As of early afternoon EST, other Specialty openers including Girl On A Bicycle (Monterey Media), Lucky Bastard (Cavu Pictures) and Jimmy P. (IFC Films) hadn’t reported their numbers. Here’s hoping IFC Films will back Jimmy P., a film that premiered in competition in Cannes and later debuted Stateside at the New York Film Festival. It has had decent reviews, so hopefully it is not simply being dumped by the distributor. Stay tuned…

Among second weekend holdovers, Kino Lorber continued to reap decent numbers for its doc Afternoon Of A Faun: Tanaquil Le Clercq, which continued its exclusive engagement at the Film Society of Lincoln Center. It grossed $9K Friday to Sunday. The film bowed to the tune of $16,500 last weekend. Its two week cume is now $38,507. Cohen Media Group shed four locations in the second frame of The Last Of The Unjust. It grossed nearly $21K ($5,203 average) in four theaters. The PTA is a jump for the feature, which averaged only $1,815 in its opening Friday to Sunday a week prior.
Best Picture Oscar hopefuls continue to dominate the field, though most slimmed down their holdover releases with one big exception. The Weinstein Company added a whopping 721 theaters for Philomena in its 13th weekend in release and the response was decent. It grossed $1.442M for a $1,177 screen average. The film’s fellow contenders — also well into their theatrical lives — lost locations this week, but mostly continued to show box office prowess.
Philomena‘s fellow TWC release, August: Osage County, meanwhile, lost 317 theaters vs the previous weekend. It grossed $849K ($841 average) and easily sailed passed the $35M cume threshold. Its eight-week cume is now $35,730,807. 12 Years A Slave grossed $544K in its 18th weekend, averaging $1,409 in 386 theaters. Still, the average is a pick up from the previous weekend when it came in at $1,180 in 678 locations. Nebraska played 201 fewer theaters this weekend $505K ($1,559 average) in its 14th week, while Dallas Buyers Club lost a comparatively higher 265 runs from the week prior. It grossed $404K for an $1,812 average, which is a jump from its $1,293 PTA in 488 theaters last weekend.
