The Grammy Awards are starting to rival the Oscars in length. Last night, the 56th Grammys ran for 3 hours and 45 minutes. That’s 10 minutes longer than the last Academy Awards, 15 minutes longer than last year’s Grammy Awards, and the longest Grammys in 22 years. And that is despite the producers starting to roll the end credits while A-list rockers Trent Reznor, Queens of the Stone Age, Dave Grohl and Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac were still performing, prompting a ticked-off Renzor to tweet a “heartfelt F**K you” to Grammy organizers. The busting out-of-control length of the show that is pushing it to the wee hours does not seem to be hurting ratings: Last night’s Grammys drew 28.51 million viewers, up a fraction from last year’s audience of 28.37 million to post the awards show’s second-biggest audience since 1993, behind only the blockbuster 2012 Grammys that followed Whitney Houston’s death. In adults 18-49, this year’s show averaged a 9.9, off by 2% from last year’s 10.1. CBS dominated the night in total viewers and adults 18-49.
Fox’s comedies were down sharply from their last originals two weeks ago that faced the Golden Globes on NBC. The Simpsons (1.7) was down 23%, Bob’s Burgers (1.5) was down 25%, Family Guy (2.0) was down 26%, and American Dad (1.5) was down 35%. NBC’s Pro Bowl coverage posted a 6.7 rating in the metered market households, down 13% from last year when it didn’t have to face the Grammys. On ABC, : Sean And Catherine’s Wedding special managed a 1.6, up from the 1.0 for the previous Bachelor nuptials, the Ashley And JP’s Wedding special.
