EXCLUSIVE: NBC has put in development One Kick, a drama based on the upcoming book series by Chelsea Cain, the best-selling author of the Archie Sheridan/Gretchen Lowell series of thriller novels. Feature writer Matt Lopez will write the adaptation and will executive produce with former Dexter executive producer Sara Colleton, who was with the hit Showtime drama for its entire eight-season run. One Kick tells the story of Kick Lannigan, who made national news as a child after being abducted, and later rescued, in an Elizabeth Smart-type kidnapping. Determined to never fall victim again, Kick has trained herself in martial arts and firearms. She finds her calling when a mysterious billionaire offers her the resources and high-tech tools she needs to hunt down predators and rescue other abductees.
In features, Lopez, repped by WME and Lichter, Grossman, is a go-to screenwriter for family fare, including Bedtime Stories, Race To Witch Mountain, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and the upcoming Clifford The Big Red Dog. He has explored darker territory in TV, writing ABC pilots Gothica and Jekyll & Hyde the last two years. One Kick expands Colleton’s relationship with NBC topper Bob Greenblatt who developed Dexter with her at Showtime and ordered it to series. She also serves as an executive producer on NBC’s drama Hannibal. The One Kick book will be published next summer by Simon & Schuster; Cain is repped by Joy Harris Literary Agency.
