EXCLUSIVE: Bravo Media has given the green light to Girlfriends’ Guide To Divorce, a scripted pilot from writer-producer Marti Noxon and Universal Cable Prods. Based on the “Girlfriends’ Guide…” book series by Vicki Iovine, Girlfriends’ Guide To Divorce follows the famous author of a best-selling self-help book series who is hiding the fact that she’s separated from her husband as she starts to navigate her life as a single woman in her early 40s in Los Angeles. She finds herself seeking advice from her divorced friends, instead of her married ones which leads to some unexpected and life-changing experiences.
Noxon, best known for her work on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Mad Men, Grey’s Anatomy and Glee, wrote the pilot, and is executive producing with Dawn Olmstead (Prison Break), Iovine and Meryl Poster, currently TV president at the Weinstein Co. who helped put the project together before joining the company. “Marti’s incredible talent and unique perspective shines through in this compelling exploration of a modern woman’s journey through divorce and the next chapter of her life,” said Andrew Wang, Bravo’s VP of Scripted Development and Production. Added Noxon, “The funny, frank and fabulous tone of Vicki’s books provide a perfect jumping off place for the show. I love Bravo and look forward to creating a great ‘second marriage’ with them!” Columnist Iovine has been writing about her life following the divorce from music mogul Jimmy Iovine after 24 years of marriage. “We all know divorce is difficult to endure, but since most of us are living with it or in fear of it, let’s tell the truth about the pain and the possibilities — and all the ‘new sex’ along the way,” she said.
Girlfriend’s Guide was originally set up at Showtime last year and was announced as part of Bravo’s development slate in April. Bravo first ventured into scripted TV with two pilot orders, for Rita and Joneses, last December. Of the two, only Rita was produced and it didn’t go forward. The channel’s new development slate, which Girlfriends’ Guide is part of, was put together after the recent top management realignment at NBCU cable, which saw Bonnie Hammer add Bravo to her portfolio.
It has been a great week for Noxon, repped by WME and Hansen Jacobson, who last Tuesday received another pilot order at Lifetime for Unreal. She also has the hot script Proof with M Night Shyamalan at Syfy. On the feature side, she is currently adapting Tomb Rider for MGM, and recently completed The Glass Castle for Lionsgate with Jennifer Lawrence attached. Noxon’s Tiny Pyro production banner has multiple projects in development, which Noxon is shepherding with Director of Development Susie Cooley.
