BBC Docs Veteran Charlotte Moore Tipped For BBC One Controller Job
UPDATE, Wednesday AM: The BBC has officially announced the appointment of Commissioning Editor for Documentaries Charlotte Moore to the post of Controller of BBC One. The exec had been acting as interim Controller since Danny Cohen moved up to Director of Television in April. Among BBC One’s hit shows are Call The Midwife, Last Tango In Halifax and Strictly Come Dancing; Doctor Who celebrates its 50th anniversary later this year and returns for an eighth season in 2014. Moore, who joined the BBC in 2006, will be charged with revamping The Voice, which just closed its second season this weekend after trailing ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent in the ratings. On the appointment, she said, “BBC One has a unique role to play in this country and I’m looking forward to working with many talented people. I’m incredibly excited by Danny’s vision for BBC Television and what the future holds in the digital age.”
Lau Kar-leung Dies; Martial Arts Actor, Director And Action Choreographer
Lau Kar-leung, a veteran director and award-winning martial arts action choreographer who had a two-decade association with Shaw Brothers Studio, died Tuesday after a long battle with cancer. He was 76. In 1975, Lau became the first action choreographer to segue into directing with Shaw Brothers’ The Spiritual Boxer. He went on to helm more than two dozen films including 36th Chamber of Shaolin and Jackie Chan’s Drunken Master II (released in the US as The Legend Of Drunken Master). He began his career in film in 1950 as an extra and stuntman in the popular Wong Fei-Hung movies. His most recent credit was as an actor and action coordinator on Tsui Hark’s Seven Swords, which opened the 2005 Venice Film Festival. Lau received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2010 Hong Kong Film Awards.Telemundo’s African Channel Marks Its First Outside Latin America
NBCUniversal International Television is launching Latin American channel Telemundo in Africa. This marks the first time the pay-TV branded service will be available outside of Latin America. It will go live in 48 African countries on August 12. Telemundo will exclusively air Spanish-language telenovelas which will be dubbed into English for South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa and into Portuguese for Angola and Mozambique. This is the fifth channel brand from Universal Networks International to launch in Africa, along with Universal Channel, E! Entertainment Television, The Style Network and Studio Universal.

BBC’s Global News Services Reach Record 256M People Each Week
The BBC’s global news services reached a record 256 million people per week in the 2012-13 period. That’s 16.6 million more than the previous year for the combined BBC World Service, BBC World News and the group’s news website. Services in Persian, Arabic and Hindi were the strongest growth segment. Notably, Nigeria is the biggest driver of mobile traffic, with visitors to mobile sites increasing by over 250%. Said Peter Horrocks, Director of Global News: “The BBC World Service is emerging from a difficult period of funding cuts and the closure of services. Today’s record audience figures come despite this, thanks to the quality of our journalism and the decisions we have made to invest in new offers. … The international media market is more competitive than ever and we’ve had to innovate across the whole of our global news services to keep ourselves relevant to our audiences.”
