Jared Gurman of Long Island was arrested and charged with attempted murder after admitting shooting his girlfriend over an argument about the AMC zombie series The Walking Dead, according to Nassau County Police. According to NBC’s local NY station, authorities said Gurman, 26, believed that what happened in the series — about a man who wakes from a coma to a zombie apocalypse — could happen in real life. “He felt very adamant”, Detective Lt. Raymond Cote said at a news conference Tuesday, according to the station. “There could be military mishap that would result in some sort of virus being released that could cause a terrible thing to happen.”

His girlfriend found his ideas ridiculous. Police say the argument grew so heated that the unidentified woman didn’t want to stay overnight with Gurman, and he took her home. But he continued the fight via text message, prompting her to return at around 2:30 AM to check on him. When she arrived, he was outside with a .22-caliber rifle. After trying to talk him down, she turned to walk up the stairs and Gurman fired a shot into her back. She suffered a pierced lung, a shattered rib and a pierced diaphragm and is in stable condition, NBC4-NY said. Gurman, who had several guns in the house, first told police the shooting was accidental but later admitted it wasn’t.
