The Specialty market received a shot in the arm with the debuts of TWC’s Silver Linings Playbook and Focus Features’ Anna Karenina. Both Oscar contenders bowed at 16 theaters and scored well with audiences. Playbook won the numbers game with a robust $28,652 per theater average. In the overall box office, it came in second only to Breaking Dawn Part 2 in terms of theater average. Anna Karenina had a $19,712 PTA, also a very solid start for the Joe Wright-directed feature that has accumulated nearly $10.6 million in foreign B.O. to date. IFC Films’ Parker Posey starrer Price Check, meanwhile, opened more tepidly with a $2,300 average at IFC Center. The film played a smaller theater at the downtown Manhattan venue although most seats were filled. Filmmaker Michael Walker was on-hand for post-screening Q&As. The filmmakers will continue to tour with Price Check, which is currently available on VOD and iTunes, with stops in San Francisco next weekend and Austin on November 30.

TWC initially planned a wide rollout for Silver Linings Playbook, then changed strategy to a decidedly more limited release. Still, the film starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence will head to 440 theaters over the Thanksgiving holiday and continue to expand through Christmas growing to more than 2,000 locations by the New Year.

Weinstein Finds ‘Silver Linings’ For Oscar Race

Anna Karenina will add 11 markets over Thanksgiving and expand further November 30th. “Anna played well to the art house audience this weekend,” a Focus rep said today. “The film’s box office increased 48% from Friday to Saturday with notable box office jumps even beyond that in key markets (including San Francisco and Boston). NY, LA and DC houses were also very strong BO performers. Anna is attracting the core art house adult patrons, so Sunday should deliver the weekend’s second largest day of B.O.”

‘Anna Karenina’s Risky New Version

Price Check, which already debuted via VOD and on other digital platforms a month ago, will head to L.A. over the holiday weekend. HBO Films’ doc Mea Maxima Culpa debuted at Film Forum in NYC, but the company has not reported numbers. And Bollywood-focused Yash Raj Films’ Jab Tak Hai Jaan played its first weekend, grossing $1.25 million in 161 theaters for a $7,764 average.

Among holdovers, Submarine Deluxe’s Chasing Ice held solid, heading to 10 theaters with a $8,333 average. The film opened in a single theater last weekend with $21K. Oscilloscope’s 28 Hotel Rooms added two locations, averaging $4K in its second round. The film’s per-theater number actually jumped a grand from its $3K debut in one cinema last weekend. And Tribeca Film’s The Comedy also saw its fortunes rise in its second weekend. The film moved to Brooklyn’s BAM, grossing over $13K in one auditorium, more than double its $6K in one site last weekend. Magnolia Pictures did not report numbers for its holdover A Royal Affair.
