DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said today that DWA’s next 15 animated feature films will be mixed in Barco’s new Auro 3D sound format. “That’s like a hundred years for us, the way we go,” Katzenberg joked today about the timeline of the long-term slate. DWA’s Rise Of The Guardians, set for a November 21 release, will be the first to showcase the Auro 3D technology. At a joint press conference in LA with the digital cinema technology company, Katzenberg stressed that he thought Barco was a good partner because of the value to both consumers and exhibitors. The Barco technology works to create sound in three distinct layers — surround, height and overhead. “What differentiates the Barco Auro 11.1 format from previous sound technologies is that it enables us to place aural objects around the auditorium to envelope the audience with the rich, acoustic spaces that we create virtually,” said Jim Beshears, head of postproduction at DWA. Said Barco SVP Wim Buyens: “We couldn’t be more excited than to share this technology with DreamWorks Animation. Our two companies have merged imagination and technology.”
