EXCLUSIVE: CBS Television Distribution president John Nogawski is leaving after almost 30 years at the company. Following his exit, CBS is installing a new organizational structure with Armando Nuñez, currently President of CBS Studios International, expanding his role to oversee domestic and international distribution. A formal announcement is expected later this morning. (UPDATE: The official release is posted below.)

Nogawski’s departure follows a very soft start for CBS TV Distribution’s high-profile new syndicated daytime talk show hosted by Survivor‘s Jeff Probst. Another high-profile syndicated talk show shepherded by Nogawski, a late-night talker with Arsenio Hall, is slated for a fall 2013 launch with the Tribune stations as a core group.

CBS TV Distribution boasts the top daytime syndicated series with court show Judge Judy and talk show Dr. Phil. But it has struggled to successfully expand its talk-show portfolio beyond the series brought in by the 2006 merger with King World: Dr. Phil, which spawned spinoff The Doctors, and Rachael Ray.

CBS TV Distribution has been successful on the off-network sale side, recently landing blockbuster deals for NCIS: LA and Hawaii Five-0 in the series’ first seasons on air. The company previously had a very rich off-network deal for drama Medium at Lifetime. 

Before the 2006 merger of King World and CBS Paramount Domestic Television into CBS TV Distribution, Nogawski had been President, CBS Paramount Domestic TV since March 2002. In that position, he was responsible for the sales and marketing of top entertainment newsmagazines Entertainment Tonight and its spinoff The Insider.

Previously, Nogawski served as President, Distribution, Paramount Domestic TV, a position he held since 1999. He first joined Paramount in 1983, became an account executive in the Division in 1985 and was named VP, Eastern Regional Manager, Paramount Domestic Television, running the New York sales office, in 1990.

Nuñez was named President, CBS Studios International in August 2004, following the merger of CBS Broadcast International and Paramount International Television. He joined CBS Broadcast International as President in July 1999. In January 2000, following the merger of CBS Television and King World, he assumed the role of President, CBS Broadcast International and EVP, CBS Enterprises. Nuñez has overseen all international distribution, sales and marketing for programming from CBS Television Studios, CBS Television Distribution, CBS News, Showtime and CBS’ library of television product.

LOS ANGELES – Armando Nuñez has been named President and Chief Executive Officer of the CBS Global Distribution Group, a newly created position that will lead CBS’s combined domestic and international television distribution business, it was announced today by Leslie Moonves, President and Chief Executive Officer, CBS Corporation.

Nuñez, who has served as President of CBS’s international television division since 1999, will now oversee a streamlined worldwide television distribution operation that includes CBS Television Distribution, a preeminent syndicator of first-run and off-network programming, and CBS Studios International, which licenses CBS programming worldwide to more than 200 markets across multiple media platforms.

His expanded purview will include a domestic television company that features seven of the top 10 first-run syndicated shows – including long-running franchises such as JUDGE JUDY, ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT, DR. PHIL, WHEEL OF FORTUNE and JEOPARDY! – with the international arm that has grown into the top supplier of U.S. programming in Europe, featuring CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION, the most-watched show in the world.

Under Nuñez’ leadership, CBS Studios International revenues have grown to more than $1 billion annually, and over the last three years he has forged international channel ventures for CBS in the UK, India, Australia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa that reach 105 million households.  He has also expanded the international licensing of CBS programming to emerging digital, satellite, on-demand and SVOD platforms, including deals with Netflix in Canada, the UK and Latin America and with Hulu in Japan.

In the newly combined structure, department heads from both CBS Television Distribution and CBS Studios International will report directly to Nuñez.

John Nogawski, President of CBS Television Distribution, will be leaving the Company after assisting with the transition.

Nuñez joined CBS Broadcast International as President in July 1999.  In January 2000, following the merger of CBS Television and King World Productions, he assumed the role of President, CBS Broadcast International and Executive Vice President, CBS Enterprises.  He was named President, CBS Studios International (formerly CBS Paramount International Television), in August 2004, following the merger of CBS Broadcast International and Paramount International Television.

Nuñez has held leadership positions in international distribution for the past 25 years.  Prior to joining CBS, he served as President, Universal Television.  In that role, he oversaw all program sales worldwide, as well as the division’s expansion in new areas of distribution.  From 1994-1997, Nuñez was President, New World International Television Distribution, with responsibility for international sales, marketing and co-production.  From 1992-1994, Nuñez was Executive Vice President, International Sales, Viacom Enterprises.

Nuñez currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Fordham University, his alma mater, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing.
