MIAMI, FL – MAY 11, 2012 – Univision Communications Inc., the leading media company serving Hispanic America, today announced the appointment of Juan Carlos Rodriguez as president of Univision Deportes. Rodriguez will lead Univision’s sports division across all platforms. He will report to Cesar Conde, president of Univision Networks.
“We are proud to have a leading sports executive like Juan Carlos lead the Univision Deportes team,” said Conde. “Beyond his unparalleled success working at Televisa, Juan Carlos is a true visionary and entrepreneur who understands our audience and the sports content they want to consume.”
“Univision Deportes is a sports powerhouse that is poised to continue delivering to its partners, clients and viewers,” said Rodriguez. “The opportunities to drive greater results within Univision Deportes are endless based on its deep connection and understanding of Hispanic sports fans.”
Regarded as one of the top sports executives in the Americas, Rodriguez has an accomplished career in the industry. He joins Univision Deportes from Televisa Deportes Network (TDN) where he held the post of CEO and grew the brand to become Mexico’s sports content brand of choice. While at Televisa, he spearheaded the launch of TDN and its sister properties TDN HD, TDN2.0, TDN Centro America and TDW, the No. 1 Mexican sports radio brand in Mexico. In addition, he successfully negotiated and acquired television and radio rights with FIFA, NFL, MLB, NBA, UEFA, RAI, CANAL PLUS, ISO and more than 10,000 hours of sports programming with worldwide vendors.
Prior to Televisa Deportes Network, Rodriguez was co-founder and CEO of Grupo Estadio. Under his leadership, Grupo Estadio became the leading partner for DIRECTV to produce and distribute the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Grupo Estadio then expanded to pay television in 2005 when it launched Estadio TV. A precursor to today’s TDN, Grupo Estadio was later acquired by Televisa. Prior to that role, he was a senior executive at Calzado Tecnico, an Adidas manufacturer in Mexico. Rodriguez is a graduate of the Advanced Management Program at IPADE Business School and holds a bachelor’s degree from Universidad Iberoamericana. He is also founder of Con Pelotas, A.C., a non-profit organization who gives away soccer balls to children in southern Mexico.
