Tuesday night was Lionsgate’s turn in the spotlight at the Colosseum where Rob Friedman, who now runs the merged Lionsgate/Summit operation, introduced the only formally scheduled feature presentation of CinemaCon, their May 18 chick flick, What To Expect When You’re Expecting. It played well but didn’t completely pack the massive theatre like the Warners and Disney presentations did earlier. Even more exciting for the exhibs was the new trailer of The Expendables sequel Friedman played for the crowd, saying he hopes it makes $100 million like the first one did. With its all-star cast of action vets including star Sly Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenneger in an expanded role, and Chuck Norris new to the mix, that ought to be a no-brainer. Earlier in the day, NATO President John Fithian noted all six major studios were presenting at CinemaCon for the first time in over a decade and that in Lionsgate we could be seeing the emergence of a seventh. With The Hunger Games and the final Twilight Saga film Breaking Dawn Part 2 upcoming , he may not be wrong but I think they are probably just as happy being the upstart indie that could.
