Ross Greenburg is leaving HBO after 33 years at the pay cable network, the last 11 as president of HBO Sports. “We believe that Ross’ track record speaks for itself,” HBO Co-President Richard Plepler and Michael Lombardo, President, HBO Programming said in a joint statement. “He has helped redefine the sports programming genre and set an extraordinary standard of excellence in the industry. We will miss his leadership, vision, creativity and passion for sports television.”
Earlier this year, Greenburg was criticized by the promoter of pay-per-view boxing star Manny Pacquiao who left HBO for Showtime, but in an interview with the New York Times today Greenburg dismissed the notion that his departure is related to the loss of Pacquiao. “That’s a silly rationale,” he said. “That added to my angst, but one fight doesn’t determine whether I stayed or I didn’t stay… I’ve accomplished everything I hoped for.”
