In his pilot writing debut, Kirkman penned Outcast on spec for The Walking Dead international partner Fox International Channels, which developed the project internally before taking it out. In a competitive situation, Cinemax acquired the script and gave it a pilot green light last July. Like The Walking Dead, Outcast too is based on a comic by Kirkman, who serves as executive producer alongside Black, David Alpert of Circle of Confusion, Sharon Tal Yguado of FIC and Sue Naegle.
Outcast, based on the Skybound/Image comic title by creator Kirkman and artist Paul Azaceta, follows Kyle Barnes (Patrick Fugit), a young man who has been plagued by demonic possession all his life. Now, with the help of the Reverend Anderson (Philip Glenister), a preacher with personal demons of his own, Kyle embarks on a journey to find answers and regain the normal life he lost. But what Kyle discovers could change his fate — and the fate of the world — forever. Gabriel Bateman co-stars. The pilot was directed by Adam Wingard.
Outcast joins a fast growing Cinemax original series slate that includes Banshee, just renewed for Season 4, The Knick and the recently picked up Quarry.
