Sony Pictures Television Networks has ordered Reckoning, a 10-episode straight-to-series psychological thriller drama, from writer David Hubbard (Noel) and veteran showrunner David Eick (Battlestar Galactica, Falling Skies).

Produced by Sony Pictures TV-owned Australian company Playmaker (The Code), Reckoning is set to begin filming July 9 in Australia for premiere on SPTN’s international channels, including AXN, in select territories in Europe and Latin America. Sony Pictures Television Distribution will handle worldwide sales of the series, which will be wholly produced and post-produced in Australia.

Reckoning is part of Sony Pictures TV Networks’s ramped up efforts in the original production arena. It follows the success of SPTN’s Absentia, a dramatic thriller starring Stana Katic and Patrick Heusinger, which was originally commissioned for AXN in 2017 and is now airing on Amazon Prime Video in the U.S. and other territories.

Written by Hubbard, who serves as showrunner with David Eick, Reckoning is also in the thriller genre. It explores the darkest corners of the male psyche through the eyes of two fathers, one of whom is a serial-killer. Like most men, Leo and Mike try to do what’s best for the people they love, the families they protect. But as both struggle to suppress their inner demons, the murder of a local teenager sets them on a course of mutual destruction that will emanate through every facet of their quiet, suburban community.

David Taylor and David Maher (The Code, Chosen) will executive produce for Playmaker. Shawn Seet (The Code, Storm Boy) will direct and co-executive produce with Diane Haddon producing (The Code, Friday On My Mind). Susie Farris (Mr. Robot) will oversee casting in the U.S. and Leigh Pickford (Predestination) will head up casting in Australia.

Reckoning is one of those rare reads you just can’t shake. It’s a family drama like no other, a real study in human behavior and what makes people do – or not do – the unfathomable. And with AXN’s core focus on high-end crime thrillers, Reckoning fits the bill in every way. We are thrilled to work with David Hubbard and David Eick in bringing this beautiful script to life, and Sony’s very own Playmaker is just the team to make it happen,” said Marie Jacobson, EVP, Programming and Production, Sony Pictures Television Networks.

Playmaker specializes in authored primetime drama. Some of its recent titles include Bite Club (Nine Network), The Wrong Girl (Ten Network), Love Child (Nine Network), House Husbands (Nine Network), The Code (ABC), as well as the recent mini-series Friday On My Mind (ABC) and the Mandarin-language version of thriller Chosen, made in Australia for China’s largest streaming service Iqiyi.

“We are excited to be working with Marie and the team at Sony Pictures Television Networks on this thrilling new international drama,” said Playmaker’s Taylor and Maher. “David Hubbard’s character-driven narrative is full of suspense and major twists that make for an intense, riveting journey. We can’t wait to bring this story to life on screen.”
