Emmy winner Anthony Hemingway has been tapped to direct the premiere episode of upcoming series The Purge for USA Network and Syfy.

The project comes from franchise creator James DeMonaco, Blumhouse Television — the TV division of the movies’ producer Blumhouse Prods. — and Universal Cable Productions. The franchise, about the one day each year when murder and mayhem is legalized, hatched its highest-grossing effort so far with the most recent installment, 2016’s The Purge: Election Year. DeMonaco oversees the series, which will be an entirely new chapter in America’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness and is slated to launch in conjunction with the next installment in the movie franchise, The First Purge.

The ensemble cast includes Gabriel Chavarria, Jessica Garza, Amanda Warren, Colin Woodell.

The films’ Platinum Dunes and DeMonaco’s longtime producing partner Sebastien K. Lemercier will executive produce. Thomas Kelly serves as executive producer/showrunner of the series.

Hemingway most recently directed and executive produced Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G. anthology series for USA Network. His other directing/EP credits include American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson, for which he won an Emmy and a Golden Globe. He also served as director and executive producer on Underground and has previously directed episodes of Universal Cable Productions’ Battlestar Galactica, in addition to American Horror Story, Orange Is The New Black, Empire and Shameless, among others. Hemingway is repped by WME and Hansen Jacobson.
