EXCLUSIVE: Maia Mitchell (The Fosters, Teen Beach Movie) is set to play KJ Apa’s love interest in the young adult film The Last Summer from Gulfstream Pictures. Bill Bindley is directing the pic from a screenplay he co-wrote with Scott Bindley, with a script polish by April Prosser.

It follows a group of high school grads whose lives intersect in Chicago over the summer before they start college. Mitchell’s character is Phoebe, a budding filmmaker in the midst of shooting a documentary about her peers.

Jacob Latimore also co-stars in the film. Bill Bindley is producing the project with Mike Karz and Wayne Rice.

Mitchell, who starred in all five seasons of Freeform’s The Fosters, which is wrapping up in a three-night series finale to air in June, will lead The Fosters offshoot series along with Cierra Ramirez. On the film side, Mitchell co-stars in the Sundance pic, Never Goin’ Back, from writer/director Augustine Frizzell and Hot Summer Nights, both to be released by A24.

She’s repped by WME, Echo Lake Entertainment, and Myman Greenspan.
