EXCLUSIVE: Okja, the Netflix parable film about a supersized pig and the theme of treatment of animals raised for food, and Bleecker Street’s military drama Megan Leavey, about the bond between a Marine and her combat dog, both have been named Outstanding Feature Film at 32nd annual Genesis Awards.

Presented by the Humane Society of the United States, the awards are designed to honor animal-protection themes in news and entertainment and are awarded in 18 categories covering every aspect of the industry. Fox TV’s perennial animated series The Simpsons was another big winner, taking the Sid Caesar Comedy Award, and ABC News’ Nightline won a pair of awards in the National  TV News Magazine category.

Univision and National Geographic tied for winning the most trophies with four, and HBO Documentary Films, Nickelodeon and NPR were among other top honorees.

Projects about dogs serving in the line of fire proved to be a big contender this year, with not only Megan Leavey taking top film honors but also HBO’s War Dog: A Soldier’s Best Friend tying with Nat Geo’s Mission Criticial: Orangutan on the Edge taking Outstanding TV Documentary.  As they were in the Outstanding Feature Film category , the combination of dogs and a pig scored for Outstanding Documentary Film with Search Engine’s  Sled Dogs  and Piggy Films’ The Last Pig grabbing the gold.

“The media has picked up on the public’s insatiable appetite for stories about animals and how they need our help,” said Kitty Block, acting president and CEO of the Humane Society of The United States. “We applaud their contributions to raising awareness, for celebrating the human animal bond and for helping us drive real change for animals.”
