Ed Begley Jr. has been tapped for a lead role opposite Lake Bell and Dax Shepard in Bless This Mess, Fox’s single-camera comedy pilot from New Girl creator Liz Meriwether, which has Bell attached to star, co-write and direct.
Written by Meriwether and Bell, Bless This Mess centers on a newlywed couple — Rio (Bell) and Mike (Shepard) — that gives up their drab and unfulfilling lives in NYC and moves to Nebraska to live a simpler life. It doesn’t work out like they planned.
Begley will play Rudy, a strong, silent type who’s known Mike as a child and now lives on a barn on Mike and Rio’s farm.
Bell and Meriwether executive produce with Katherine Pope, Shepard and Erin O’Malley.
The pilot will film in June to accommodate Bell’s feature schedule and won’t be in consideration for fall.
Bless This Mess reunites Begley with Shepard after Begley Jr. co-starred in the 2017 movie CHIPS, written, directed by and starring Shepard.
Begley, a six-time Emmy nominee for St. Elsewhere, co-starred on the first season of Future Man and will continue on the Hulu series as a guest star. He also recently recurred on Portlandia. Begley is repped by Innovative and Industry Entertainment.
