EXCLUSIVE: The upcoming John Travolta- and Kellan Lutz-starring action film Speed Kills will feature an extra edition: Speed Kills VR Experience, augmenting the standard format HD 4K with an hourlong virtual reality version. It’s the latest dip in the sandbox for the format, which has been gaining popularity as an alternate way for Hollywood’s creators to tell their stories.
The VR version was a collaboration with TopDogVR and stars the feature film’s Travolta, Kellan Lutz, Katheryn Winnick and Jordi Mollà. (Check out a clip of Travolta and Winnick above.) It also includes Jennifer Esposito, Matthew Modine, James Remar, Michael Weston and Amaury Nolasco. It is being touted as one of the longest cinematic VR features brought on the market to date.
The Speed Kills VR Experience will be cut into eight parts and delivered to platforms (iOS, Android, Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR, STEAM) in episodic format early next year, using a customized movie-themed VR environment that will available as a free, downloadable app.
Saban Film already acquired North American rights to the action thriller at Cannes this year. The John Luessenhop-directed pic, loosely based on the life of speedboat racing champion Don Aronow, is now in postproduction with plans to be screened at the Berlin Film Festival, then released worldwide next spring or summer. Hannibal Classics Worldwide is repping it.
Lutz plays Robbie Reemer, a speedboat racing, drug-running kingpin. In one VR scene, Lutz’s character and his crew execute a drug deal out at sea — this will be part of Episode 3 of the series. The filmmakers used VR drones and VR cameras strapped to speed boats racing on the open water.

“This will set the bar for celebrity-driven cinematic virtual reality,” said VR director Travis Cloyd. “Our goal is not only to drive an audience to go see the feature film, but also give them a unique experience as if they were side-by-side with these icons. How often can you stand next to a legend going 60 mph in a speedboat? Thanks to VR, this is finally a possibility, and we are excited to be crafting compelling, action-packed content for this medium.”
The TopDogVR production company financed and produced Speed Kills VR Experience. Producers include Richard Del Castro, Guy Griffithe, and Cloyd.
