Dan Rather, who has covered every president since Dwight Eisenhower, told Conan O’Brien Monday night that Donald Trump’s presidency is unprecedented and dangerous.

“People are obsessed with the president,” Conan marveled. “A lot of people don’t know, from one day to next, what he’s going to do, what he’s going to say.”

Rather shot back, “It is important for us to remember this is not normal.”

“We’ve had presidents who did not like the press, but we’ve never had one that steadily, out of his own mouth, waged such an unrelenting campaign against the press…There is a campaign to convince people, especially young people, this is the way presidencies go. That is not true.”

Many things about the Age of Trump, Rather said, will “make people sicker than bad oysters.”

For example, his striking some sort of equivalency between neo-Nazis and other people trying to protest, sends a signal to the KKK, the former CBS evening news anchor warned. “This is unprecedented in American history…It’s a dangerous time.”
