The 27th annual IFP Gotham Awards were handed out tonight in New York, and Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me by Your Name walked away with Best Feature while Jordan Peele’s Get Out came out of the “sunken place” to clean up at the ceremony taking home trophies for Best Director and Screenplay and the Audience Award.

Other big winners of the evening included up-and-coming actor Timothée Chalamet for his role in Call Me by Your Name. Saoirse Ronan walked away with the trophy for Best Actress for her role in Lady Bird, while, in a stunning upset, James Franco won for his role in The Disaster Artist — both are A24 films. Both actors will be hosting Saturday Night Live in December.

In addition to the nominated awards, career tributes went to Jason Blum, Sofia Coppola, Al Gore, Dustin Hoffman, Nicole Kidman and Ed Lachman. The cast of Dee Rees’ Mudbound took home the Special Jury Award for Ensemble Performance, while Michael Kenneth Williams was honored with the Made in NY Award.

The Audience Award is comprised of the 14 docs and features were composed of the 14 films nominated for Best Feature, Best Documentary, and the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award. Winners were selected by online voting of IFP. In addition this year, the winner of the Breakthrough Series – Short Form (all available on the web) were selected by online IFP member voting. The Gotham Awards are also being live streamed if you care to follow along with us! :)

Joana Vicente taking the stage and immediately addresses the “tough year” Hollywood has had. She’s honoring the women and men who have stepped forward.

Dino-Ray Ramos November 27, 20175:25 pm

That wasn’t much of a monologue, but more of a “pep talk” as Mitchell said.

Dade Hayes November 27, 20175:26 pm

5:25pm: Mitchell launched the show with a monologue marbled with jokes but lacking any of the setup-punchline rhythm of most award shows. He called it “a pep talk” and it took the audience back to the 1970s, a film-rich era, comparing that time to the current Trump/Weinstein Era. “It’s a weird time,” he said. “We hashtag #resist because we want to do the right thing. … We flatten the nuance. The right thing looks like Hollywood. It’s so simple and smooth.” But, he went on, “if the news is fake, all stories are true. So you gotta make sure the stories are good.”

Dino-Ray Ramos November 27, 20175:27 pm

Vicente points out that it has been a good year for women in film: and she’s right. I’m personally rooting for Dee Rees’ Mudbound this year…and Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird ain’t too shabby either.

Dino-Ray Ramos November 27, 20175:30 pm

Lois Smith from Marjorie Prime and Brooklynn Prince from The Florida Project are up to announce Best Screenplay. SIDE NOTE: Prince is quite amazing in The Florida Project.

Dino-Ray Ramos November 27, 20175:33 pm

The Best Screenplay competition is STIFF. Get Out is the most nominated film tonight, will it nab the first award of the evening?

Dade Hayes November 27, 20175:34 pm

Jordan Peele takes the first award of the night, Best Screenplay for Get Out.

Dade Hayes November 27, 20175:37 pm

Peele ends his speech on an inspirational note. “If you help
these stories be told, they will resonate,” he said. “We need these stories.”

Dino-Ray Ramos November 27, 20175:37 pm

Last year, Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight won for Best Screenplay and it went on to win the Oscar for Best Adapted screenplay. History could possibly repeat itself this year with Jordan Peele and Get Out.

Dade Hayes November 27, 20175:38 pm

Newsman Dan Rather giving an introduction to Vice President Al Gore, who is getting a career honor. Describes him as, among other things, “popular vote getter,” to cheers.

Dade Hayes November 27, 20175:46 pm

5:47 p.m: Al Gore gives shoutout to “my Nashville peeps,” Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon. “It’s not part of this event, but Big Little Lies was awesome.”

Dino-Ray Ramos November 27, 20175:47 pm

Fun fact: Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth as nominated for Best Documentary at the 2006 Gotham Awards and won Best Documentary Feature at the Academy Awards in 2007.

Not too familiar with any of this short-form series, but my interest is piqued.

Michael Kenneth Williams, known for The Wire, The Night Of and Boardwalk Empire, is up next, getting the NYC-sponsored “Made in NY” Award.

Last year’s Breakthrough Actor went to Anya Taylor-Joy for “The Witch” — and her career seems to be doing fairly well. This year, my money is on young actor du jour Timothée Chalamet for “Call Me By Your Name.”

Dade Hayes November 27, 20176:12 pm

Winner

Breakthrough Actor

Timothée Chalamet in Call Me by Your Name (Sony Pictures Classics)

Sofia Coppola receiving a tribute honor — a lot of love in clip reel and her speech for her debut, The Virgin Suicides. (As it deserves.)

Dade Hayes November 27, 20176:25 pm

Coppola thanks her filmmaking family, including mom Eleanor, who just directed her first feature at age 80.

Dade Hayes November 27, 20176:27 pm

Mudbound gets the spotlight for the next few minutes. Seven of its core actors are getting a special Gotham Jury Award for ensemble performance.

Dino-Ray Ramos November 27, 20176:28 pm

I would like to take this moment to note that the underrated and overlooked actor Michael Stuhlbarg is in THREE awards season films this year: The Post, Call Me By Your Name, and The Shape of Water.

Dade Hayes November 27, 20176:30 pm

Awards season trivia — Mudbound was shot in 29 days; The Florida Project in 35. Both standouts, just an interesting sign of the season’s wide variety.

Dino-Ray Ramos November 27, 20176:31 pm

Last year’s Best Ensemble performance went to Moonlight — an equally beautifully film as Mudbound. As we all know, Moonlight went on to win Best Picture at the Oscars — and they both start with the letter “M”! I sense this could be a start of the Dee Rees-directed film gaining some much deserved awards season traction.

Dade Hayes November 27, 20176:34 pm

New York City royalty takes the stage, filling in for Todd Haynes to present Ed Lachmann with his tribute award.

Dade Hayes November 27, 20176:37 pm

Records probably do not exist of Gotham Awards show running times, but …. this one is off to an exceedingly slow start. Looong speeches.

Dino-Ray Ramos November 27, 20176:38 pm

Another fun, random fact: David Byrne was the lead singer of the Talking Heads. At one point in Call Me By Your Name, Timothee Chalamet’s character Elio wears a Talking Heads T shirt. #themoreyouknow

Dade Hayes November 27, 20176:44 pm

Noteworthy: Eight award recipients have come and gone from the stage, 90 minutes into this show, and zero mentions of sexual assault, Harvey, etc.

Allison Williams is right…all those shows are amazing.

Dade Hayes November 27, 20177:19 pm

Atlanta creator/star Donald Glover sends a mini-acceptance from set — “we’re jumping the shark pretty hard” so the long-awaited new season “will be our swan song.”

Dino-Ray Ramos November 27, 20177:20 pm

Last year’s winner for Breakthrough Series – Long Form was Crazy Ex-Girlfriend — and that show hasn’t jumped the shark…yet. :)

Dade Hayes November 27, 20177:32 pm

Dustin Hoffman jokes during career tribute acceptance: “I keep getting offers as I near 80 where the character is always dying of heart failure. They tell me I only need to shoot three days. In and out.”

Dade Hayes November 27, 20177:38 pm

Winner

Best Actress

Saoirse Ronan in Lady Bird (A24)

Dino-Ray Ramos November 27, 20177:40 pm

Isabelle Huppert won Best Actress for Elle at last year’s Gotham Awards. She went on to win the Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar. Looks like Saoirse Ronan might be on that track as well.

Dade Hayes November 27, 20177:44 pm

Winner

Best Actor
James Franco in The Disaster Artist (A24)

Dade Hayes November 27, 20177:45 pm

Wow, now that may be the stunner of the night — James Franco for The Disaster Artist. Based on its early path to this point, hardly the favorite going in.

Dade Hayes November 27, 20177:46 pm

Franco reads speech off his smartphone — “If anything, this is a love story.”

Dade Hayes November 27, 20177:58 pm

Nicole Kidman diagnoses the problem with the Gotham Awards: “It needs to get a little rowdier …. it seems sedate. C’mon!”

Dade Hayes November 27, 20178:02 pm

I say this as a big doc lover, but only the Gotham Awards would present Best Documentary after best actor and actress.

Dade Hayes November 27, 20178:06 pm
