Here’s a first: Woody Harrelson is set to direct and star in a live feature film event Lost In London LIVE in January. Harrelson, who also wrote the project, will be joined by Owen Wilson and Willie Nelson in the film, which will be shot in London and broadcast live to U.S movie theaters, giving audiences the chance to watch a film shot in real time.

The film, which will be shot and broadcast on January 19, 2017, is loosely based on a crazy night full of real-life events. Harrelson plays himself as he struggles to get home to his family while run-ins with royalty, old friends and the law all seem to conspire to keep him from succeeding.

Ken Kao of Waypoint Entertainment will produce alongside Harrelson while special events company Fathom Events, which has the largest live cinema network in North America, will facilitate the live production of the film.

“I’ve always loved theatre and film and wanted to find the best way to merge the two,” said Harrelson. “When I decided to shoot this in real time, I realized it wasn’t quite like true theatre because the one piece missing was a live audience. By broadcasting the film live as it is being shot I hope to truly blend the excitement of live theater with the scale and scope of the film.”

Speaking to Deadline, Fathom Events CEO John Rubey said the event was a true first for the company. “When he [Woody] came to us with this idea we got very excited and couldn’t help but jump aboard because it’s unlike anything anyone has ever seen from the entertainment industry. This will truly be a revolutionary cinema presentation, giving moviegoers the first opportunity to watch a film as it’s being shot. It’s just like being on set with Woody.”

Rubey added that the challenges – notably London’s notoriously unpredictable weather – would make it all the more interesting for audiences.

After the live event, Lost In London will go into post-production and will be released as a feature film.

The special cinema event will be broadcast live in 550 U.S. movie theaters nationwide for one night on January 19, 2017 at 9:00pm EST / 6:00pm PST. Following the film, Harrelson will participate in a live Q&A.
