EXCLUSIVE: Tuppence Middleton has joined the cast of The Weinstein Company’s The Current War, director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s drama about the battle between George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon) and rival Thomas Edison (Benedict Cumberbatch) to create a sustainable electricity system and market it to the U.S.
Middleton will play Edison’s devoted wife, Mary.
Michael Mitnick wrote the script, which takes place in the late 1880s and revolves around the two titans and their battle over the supply of electricity. Edison championed the use of a direct current for electric power distribution over an alternating current, which was backed by Westinghouse Electric and a host of European companies. Timur Bekmambetov and Basil Iwanyk will produce the project alongside Film Rites’ Steve Zaillian and Garrett Basch. The cast also includes Katherine Waterston as Westinghouse’s wife Marguerite Erskine and Nicholas Hoult as inventor and rival Nikola Tesla.
Middleton stars on the UK drama series Dickensian, was in this year’s miniseries War & Peace and the Wachowskis’ Netflix thriller Sense8. The English actress’ film credits include MI-5, Jupiter Ascending and The Imitation Game.
She is repped by UTA and Conway VanGelder Grant in the UK.
