Toni Collette and Matthew Goode are starring in Birthmarked, a comedy from director Emanuel Hoss-Desmarais and Brooklyn producer Item 7. Andreas Apergis, Michael Smiley, Fionnula Flanagan and Suzanne Clément co-star in the pic, penned by Marc Tulin. Shooting is underway outside Montreal.

The story from Hoss-Desmarais and Tulin, who worked together on the helmer’s first feature film Whitewash, is set in 1977 and revolves around a pair of respected scientists who quit their university jobs to conduct a nature-vs.-nurture experiment they think will revolutionize understanding of human identity. The experiment will reveal little scientific truth but instead lead the pair to discover the true value of family.

Pierre Even of Item 7 is producing and Susan Mullen of Parallel Film Productions is co-producer. Exec producers are Jeff Sackman and Berry Meyerowitz, who also will handle international sales, and eOne’s Mark Slone. The film will be released in Canada by eOne.
