Freeform has picked up comedy pilot Alone Together to series. The single-camera project is starring Esther Povitsky (Lady Dynamite) and Benji Aflalo (Not Safe with Nikki Glaser) and executive produced by The Lonely Island trio of Akiva Schaffer, Andy Samberg, and Jorma Taccone.
Alone Together centers on Esther (Povitsky) and Benji (Aflalo), platonic best friends who want nothing more than to be accepted by the vain and status-obsessed culture. Despite their sometimes contentious relationship, when push comes to shove, they’ve got each other’s back…and they have nobody else to hang out with.
“We are so proud of this series as it perfectly embodies the evolving Freeform brand and our dedication to programming for the 20-something viewer,” said Freeform EVP programming Karey Burke. “Our audience will quickly fall in love as we did with real-life best friends Esther and Benji, who navigate a world of perfect 10s as self-proclaimed 6s.”
Alone Together underlines Freeform’s commitment to single-camera comedy. The network shifted its focus last year though it is still looking for its first single-camera series that will stick. It has had success in the multi-camera arena with Baby Daddy and Young & Hungry, its two returning comedy series for next year.
In addition to Povitsky and Aflalo, the pilot episode of Alone Together features guest stars Chris D’Elia, Ginger Gonzaga, Edgar Blackmon, Hayley Marie Norman, Kamilla Alnes, Jim O’Heir and Justine Lupe. Alone Together comes from Esther Povitsky, Benji Aflalo and Eben Russell, who serve as writers and executive producers. Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, Akiva Schaffer, Billy Rosenberg and Hunter Covington also serve as executive producers. Daniel Gray Longino directed the pilot.
Freeform’s other pilots, dramas Issues and The Deep, are very much in contention for a series order.
