Here’s some good news for Paramount from the YouTube generation, that fickle demo that movie studios stress over whenever it doesn’t show up at theaters: The trailer for XXX: The Return Of Xander Cage which premiered via star Vin Diesel on Facebook Live has clicked 100 million views across various platforms in its first two days. The sequel, which marks the return of Diesel in the title role after a near 15-year absence, opens January 20. The XXX 3 trailer will show ahead of Doctor Strange this weekend.

The first XXX produced by Revolution Studios and released by Sony looked to be the beginning of a new franchise for Vin Diesel in addition to Fast & Furious when it opened in August 2002 to $44.5M and a domestic of $142.1M and global of $277.4M. The hook? He’s an extreme sports spy, and chances are when he drops from a bridge, he’s surfing a sports car to the ground. Diesel wasn’t available for the 2005 sequel, so they cast Ice Cube instead. But XXX fans refused to be duped, only spending $26.8M stateside to see the movie and $71M worldwide.

Diesel hosted the exclusive Facebook Live trailer launch from the Melrose lot, with the cast dropping into his livestream from around the globe including Ruby Rose in New Zealand, Donnie Yen in Hong Kong, Nina Dobrev and Michael Bisping in Los Angeles, Nicky Jam in Miami, Ariadna Gutierrez in Columbia, and Tony Jaa in Asia. They were also joined by cast members Kris Wu, Deepika Padukone and Neymar, who shared the trailer via their Facebook, Weibo, Instagram and Twitter pages.

By comparison, Fifty Shades Darker earned 114M views in first 24 hours, while Force Awakens clocked 112M. But still, for XXX 3, not too bad for the comeback of a dormant franchise.

Sunday marked the film’s Facebook engagement debut with exclusive teases launched via the cast’s own handles to their global fan bases. Exclusive character posters were launched on Monday, which segued to Tuesday’s live digital online event. Diesel is arguably the biggest Hollywood star on social media counting 100.3M on Facebook, and another 28.4M on Instagram for a combined 128.7M.

The XXX: The Return Of Xander Cage trailer was part of Paramount’s tight, riveting reel that they showed off to the media in New York and Los Angeles.
