Magnolia Pictures has snapped up worldwide rights to Shot! The Psycho-Spiritual Mantra of Rock, Barnaby Clay’s hallucinatory documentary on iconic rock photographer and artist Mick Rock. The film, which premiered at Tribeca, chronicles the life of the man whose work with the likes of David Bowie, Queen, Blondie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Kate Moss and Lady Gaga created many of the images that would come to define them. MAgnolia plans a 2017 theatrical release.
Financed and produced by Vice Documentary Films and Straight Up Films, and co-produced by RockEye Productions, Shot! explores the creative mind and extraordinary imprint made by Rock, who advanced rock music iconography as an art form. Presented in Rock’s own words, the film follows his journey from the glam rock shimmer of London through the snarl of NYC punk and into the new millennium, combining a portrait of the man who did the work with a look at what the work did to the man.
“The number of iconic photos that Mick Rock has taken and his access to the most compelling figures of our time is staggering,” Magnolia Pictures President Eamonn Bowles said. “This film beautifully realizes his journey.”
The deal was negotiated by Magnolia co-EVP Dori Begley and SVP Acquisitions John Von Thaden with WME Global on behalf of the filmmakers. Magnolia Head of Worldwide Sales Scott Veltri will be representing the film for Magnolia International at AFM. All international rights are available.
